1203 Colwyn Burchall

Bermuda National Library presents the latest in their Bermuda Connections Series as they invite you to join author, educator and literacy specialist Colwyn Burchall on Thursday, December 3rd.

From 5pm until 8pm, there will be a book reading, sale and discussion of his highly anticipated book, They Called Him ‘Roose’ : Paulu Kamarakafego and the Making of a Bermudian Revolutionary.

Some merry melodies can be heard in St. John’s Church as Saltus Grammar School presents their annual Carols For All concert on Thursday, December 3rd.

This will start at 7pm and promises a wonderful start to the holiday season.

1203 Great Gunpowder Plot 1775

Come out for an evening of treason, murder and mystery at Gunpowder Plot: The Defining Story By Michael G. Marsh, the latest in the series of BUEI Talks on Thursday, December 3rd.

There have been many inconsistencies, myths, and un-answerable questions about the Great Gunpowder Plot of 1775. Local author, Mike Marsh, will unfold this fascinating story and answer many of the questions. There will be signed copies of ‘The Defining Story of Bermuda’s Great Gunpowder Plot 1775’ available on the night and local artist and musician, Michael Cacy will perform for the first time a Folk Calypso song about the plot. Peter Frith of the Bermuda National Trust will kick off the evening with a welcome.  A book signing will be at 7pm.

The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event.  Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers.  For dinner reservations call 295-4207.

1204 Gift of Giving

Gina Spence Productions and Bermuda Economic Development Corporation presents The Gift of Giving on Friday, December 4th.

This will be held from 6pm until 9pm at at Union Square (Place’s Cafe Parking lot) where there will be giveaway prizes including turkeys, hams and Christmas trees.  You can also expect live entertainment, Gombeys, face painting, fun castle and a special appearance from Santa.

St. David’s County Cricket Club will be having their 2015 Christmas Party on Friday, December 4th.

This will run from 8pm until 2am, with music by DJ B-Rock.  There will also be raffles with part proceeds towards medical expenses for Malinda O’Connor.

With the excitement of Christmas drawing near, the Elves are here to spread their cheer as Santa’s Elves Arrive at People’s on Friday, December 4th

From 6pm until 8pm every Friday until Christmas, you can meet the Elves and ride the Elf Express during late night shopping.  The Elf Express is a train that will take passengers on a ride around Hamilton, departing every 15 minute, with both drop off and pick up at People’s.  You will also be able to play their in-store contest for a chance to win great prizes.

1206 Book of Poetry

Shedding a light on her life journey told in her unique voice, E. Merle Brock Swan Williams, MBE, veteran educator and founder of the Adult Education Centre, will launch a book of poetry on Sunday, December 6th.

The poetry covers personal, social, cultural themes told in sometimes humorous, and at times emotionally heavy hitting language.

From 2.30pm in the Blue Room at Bermuda College (H115), Ms. Williams will meet and greet the guests, give readings and sell signed copies of the book.

 

 

 

As Bermuda approaches the festive season, the air is filled with presentations of Advent and Christmas music in various forms.  Wesley Methodist Church will present a Recital by the gifted young American Organist-Composer Chaz Bowers on Sunday, December 6th.

Mr. Bowers has a special interest in sacred music, and earned his Master’s degree from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania. The organist has also composed many sacred works for various vocal and instrumental combinations. For more about his studies, accomplishments and busy career visit website www.ChazBowers.net.

The recital will begin at 4pm and, for his Bermuda debut, Mr. Bowers’ programme of Advent and Christmas music will feature works by Bach, Guilimant and others, as well as his own compositions. There will also be some festive audience participation.

Proceeds are in aid of Wesley’s Organ Fund and Food Hamper programme.

 

Bermuda National Gallery will reopen on Monday, December 7th.

Exhibits will include the 2015 Annual Student Art Exhibition: Local Impact, Global Action: A Community Project on the World.

Highlights from The Young Collection will also be showcased, celebrating the diversity of our world through this important gift to the BNG.

Highlights of the BNG Collection will be on display in the Watlington Room and The Ondaatje Wing.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays, closed on public holidays. The exhibit will run for the month of December.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for BNG members, NARM members, seniors, students and children.

1211 BR50 Community Carol Concert

The final event in the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s 50th Anniversary calendar brings the celebratory year to a festive close with the BR50 Community Carol Concert on Friday, December 11th.

The concert will take place at the junction of Reid and Queen Streets, providing over an hour of entertainment for the whole family from 7pm.  This will be led by the Regiment’s Band and Corps of Drums, who will be joined by Somerset Brigade Band, Bermuda Philharmonic Society, Bermuda Youth Orchestra, Bermuda Chamber Choir, and Bermuda Islands Pipe Band.

You are invited to share in the spirit of Christmas and help spread joy throughout our community by attending this free event.

1211 ADHT Tour

The African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) Bermuda Foundation invite you to join them on a unique Guided Walking Tour of North East Hamilton with Mr. Charles Jeffers, raconteur extraordinaire on Fridays, December 11th and 18th.

Starting from 6.30pm at the corner of Court and Dundonald Streets, Mr. Jeffers will share the history, culture and personalities of the area through personal stories. In this hour-long tour, you can also learn about the entrepreneurship of persons of African descent who settled, worked and lived in the area from the late 1800s until the present.

The December edition of the Department of Community & Cultural Affairs’ Historical Heartbeats Lecture Series will be the North Village Band and Friends Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 12th.

1212 Boat Parade at the Hamilton Princess

It’s Bermuda’s largest single spectator event of the year and a wonderful way to entertain family and friends so the Hamilton Princess invite you to enjoy the Christmas Boat Parade with them on Saturday, December 12th.

The Somerset 2015 Christmas Parade will take place on Sunday, December 13th.

This year’s parade starts from the Somerset Bus Terminal at 5pm, stopping at Caesar’s Pharmacy and ends at Somerset Cricket Club. Santa will then welcome children at his workshop at the Club, where you can also enjoy short performances by church groups and school children.  Refreshments will be available for purchase.

The Bermuda Chamber of Commerce invite you to join them for their latest Lunch & Learn, Architect: Registration, Professional Practice & Accountability, presented by Institute of Bermuda Architects on Wednesday, January 20th.

Offering a variety of yoga styles accessible to new beginners and regular students, the Bermuda Yoga Festival 2016 is a 3-day yoga and music festival running from Friday, April 29th until Sunday, May 1st.
