It’s completely blows my mind how people can say that Bermuda is boring at this time of year.  Yes, we all miss beach, boat and BBQ time but just have a scroll through this mammoth post to see all the lovely events that are happening soon.  And we don’t even have to deal with blizzards!

 

Here’s the latest on what’s coming up in Bermuda:

 

0201 BNG Current Exhibits

There are three current exhibits at Bermuda National Gallery on the 2nd Floor in City Hall.

The first is Peter Woolcock: A Tribute, which celebrates the artist’s journey and achievements as a well-known illustrator of political cartoons and children’s books.

Highlights from the Young Collection reflects the diversity of our Island’s culture while celebrating an important gift to the BNG.

Finally, Highlights of the BNG Collection is located in two gallery spaces, each with its own theme, with artwork arranged in juxtaposition across time periods and regions.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays, closed on public holidays. The exhibits will run until May 28th.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for BNG members, NARM members, seniors and students.

0125 Week of Prayer

First Church of God on Angle Street Intercessory Ministry invite you to join them as they engage in 5 Keys to Prayer, which promise to prosper your soul, at a Week of Prayer from Monday, January 25th until Friday, January 29th.

All services will take place in the sanctuary from 7pm until 8.30pm nightly.

The speakers and Keys for the week are Min. Ann Smith with Enhance on Monday, Sis. Ellen Joell with Empower on Tuesday, Deacon Andre Hayward with Inform on Wednesday, Bro. Franklyn Francis with Accelerate on Thursday, and Sis. Eugenia Robinson with Activate on Friday.

These events are free and all are welcome.  There will also be fellowship and refreshments on the Friday.

Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art presents the new exhibit Surreal Reflections & Tic Tac Toe by Andy Detzer, opening to the public in the Rick Faries Gallery on Friday, January 29th.

The opening reception will be from 5.30pm until 7.30pm and the exhibit will run until February 10th.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 11am until 4.30pm on Sundays.  Masterworks is closed on public holidays.  General admission is $5, or free for members and children under 12.

0130 Flea Market and Car Wash

Enjoy a fun-filled community fundraising event at Francis Patton Primary School’s Parent Teacher Association’s Flea Market and Car Wash on Saturday, January 30th.

From 8.30am until 3pm at Francis Patton Primary School, you can buy or sell a variety of items.  This is a rain or shine event.  While you shop, you can have your car washed by the Student Light House Team, who will also be raising funds for their school trip.

The cost to rent a space is $30, or $20 for charities.  The cost of the car wash is $15 for the exterior only or $20 for full service.  Donations will also be gratefully accepted.

0130 Super Saturday at Masterworks

Saturday, January 30th is the last Saturday of the month, which means that it’s Super Saturday at Masterworks in the Botanical Gardens!

Each month has a different theme and this one will be Fun at the Zoo.  From 10am until 2pm, children and their families will be encouraged to participate in free zoo-themed creative activities for all ages.

Homer’s Cafe is also open from 9am until 4pm, so you can enjoy a delicious lunch with the family after taking part.

There is no need to register so you can just turn up on the day.

0130 Saturday Sip and Shop

Discovery Wines extend a standing invitation to you for their Saturday Sip & Shop.

From 10am until 3pm at their warehouse on Bakery Lane, DW will always have at least four bottles of wine open for tasting along with a few nibbles.  There will also be 10% off featured wines.

This will run weekly except for public holidays and the Saturday of Cup Match weekend.

0130 Lip Synching Saturdays

Channel your inner rock star as Bermuda Bistro at the Beach is hosting a weekly Lip Syncing Competition starting on Saturday, January 30th.

From 9pm until 11pm for the next 4 Saturdays, you are invited to come and watch your friends entertain the crowd for a chance of a cash prize.  Fancy dress is encouraged.

The participation fee is $20.

0131 Eastern Counties Relay

Eastern Counties in conjunction with Swan’s Running Club presents The Eastern Counties Relay Race on Saturday, January 31st.

The race starts at 8.30am from St. David’s Cricket Club to Stock Point, from Stock Point to Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club to Cleveland County Club and then to Flatt’s Field. Teams of 4 can be same sex or mixed.

Red Steakhouse and Bar is proud to be teaming up with Burrows and Gosling’s to bring you Wine Tasting Mondays from Monday, February 1st.

Every Monday until February 22nd, they will feature a delicious wine pairing that will include 2 or 3 glasses of wine, an after dinner drink and a specialty drink.

The cost is $25 per person, plus gratuities.  The price includes canapés and nibbles that perfectly compliment the beverages.

0201 Bird Counts

Back by popular demand, BUEI and the Bermuda Audubon Society present the latest in the series of BUEI Talks, Looking Back on 40 Years of Christmas Bird Counts by Andrew Dobson, on Monday, February 1st.

The Christmas Bird Count has been an annual event in Bermuda since 1975. An incredible 250 bird species have been recorded. Andrew Dobson will give an illustrated lecture to show many of these species and changing patterns of bird abundance over this period. As well as the serious effort of citizen science, Andrew will relate a number of surprising anecdotes!

The lecture will start at 7.30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium and Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event.  Reservations are available from 5pm for the sushi bar and the full menu will be available from 6pm – please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers.  For dinner reservations call 295-4207.

Wine Focus Wednesdays is an exclusive wine tasting series, where you will be guided through an in-depth tasting, featuring a specific region grape varietal or theme. You will be given the opportunity to taste five different wines that truly exemplify the different terroirs and grape varietals in an intimate group setting while snacking on one of their delectable cheese boards.

The South American flight featured in this tasting will include more esoteric varietals such as Torrontés and Carménère, as well as an expensive, show-stopping Malbec.  Providing you with interesting facts about each region’s wine-making history, they will walk you through the different regions of Chile and Argentina.

Bermuda National Gallery invite you to join them them as the jurors discuss the contemporary art movement and the Bermuda Biennial exhibition at Bermuda Biennial 2016: Memories of the Present Jury Presentation on Thursday, February 4th.

Sponsored by Bacardi Limited, the reception will begin at 5.30pm, followed by the presentation at 6pm.  This event will feature co-jurors Holly Bynoe (Senior Curator, National Art Gallery of Bahamas; Executive Director, ARC magazine) and Valerie Cassel Oliver (Chief Curator, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston).

0207 Dick Reno Super Bowl Blowout Party

Celebrate Super Bowl 50 in style at the Mariners Club with Smokin’ Barrel at Dick Reno’s Super Bowl Blowout Party on Sunday, February 7th.

Doors to the Mariners Club will open at noon and the festivities will start at 2pm, while the game is scheduled to begin at 7.30pm, Bermuda time.  You will be able to watch all the action on their 6 ft by 6 ftTV screens, with games, prizes and drink specials all day.

Chef Dick Reno will also be bringing the Smokin’ Barrel truck to offer Super Bowl-themed food so be sure to bring cash.

The Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard are opening their Members’ Show, featuring anything and everything to do with the subject Some Like it Hot, on Sunday, February 7th.

The opening reception will be from 3.30pm until 5.30pm.  A Members Show with a variety of media, prices and interpretations, such as Hot Weather, Hot Drinks, Red is Hot, Hot Food, He’s Hot, She’s Hot, and Anything to do with Hot.

The show will remain open until March 10th and admission is free.  The Arts Centre is open daily from 11am until 4pm, except for Good Friday and Christmas Day, and is wheelchair accessible.  From January 1st, the Arts Centre will be closed on Mondays.

Under the Distinguished Patronage of His Excellency the Governor George Fergusson and Mrs Fergusson, Bermuda Red Cross presents Shimmer & Ice Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 27th.

The festivities will begin with cocktails in the Hamilton Princess’ Harbourview Ballroom from 7pm, followed by dinner at 8pm.  After dinner, you can dance the night away to live music by Working Title Band.  There will also be the chance to win fabulous prizes on the 3-tiered Tombola and be ready to bid during their live auction.  Dress code is smart casual and the Hamilton Princess will also be offering a special Take the Elevator Home rate.

Bermuda Marathon Weekend

Put yourself to the test at the 42nd Bermuda Marathon Weekend, taking place from Friday, January 13th until Sunday, January 15th 2017.

Athletes from all over the world will come together for the KPMG Front Street Mile (Front Street at 6.30pm) on the Friday, the Bermuda 10K and 10K Walk (National Sports Centre, Devonshire at 9am) on the Saturday and the Bermuda Marathon and Half Marathon (Front Street at 8am) on the Sunday.

If you really want to challenge your body, you can also participate in the Bermuda Triangle Challenge where you run all three events in three days.
