0901 Bermdua Sand Sculpture Workshops

Summer is drawing to an end and the 21st Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition is just around the corner – you can make your own entry even better by attending the Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition Workshops on Thursday and Friday, September 2nd and 3rd.

Running from 5.30pm until 6.30pm on Horseshoe Bay each evening, the organisers are providing these free workshops on, tips and techniques on building a sand sculpture.

The workshops are free for all.

0903 Black Collective Saturday Market

Celebrate our unique culture while supporting local entrepreneurs at The Black Collective Saturday Market on Saturday, September 3rd.

Running from 10am until 4pm in the BIU parking lot across from People’s Pharmacy, the Market offers persons the opportunity to sell new and/or gently used items in these financially challenging times, in a friendly, open and fun atmosphere.

You will also have a unique opportunity to come out and meet three of our local authors, all of whom have written multiple books. From noon until 3pm, you ca come out and meet Mr. Dale Butler, Dr. Sharon Apopa and Dr. David Chapman, all in one place, purchase their books and have them signed at the same time.  You are also encouraged to bring young people to meet these community culture bearers.

0903 Back 2 School in the City

Enjoy a family-friendly fun day to celebrate the start of the school term at Back 2 School in the City on Saturday, September 3rd.

From 2pm until 7pm in front of City Hall, you can expect a great lineup of live entertainment, musicians, gombeys and a kid’s zone with fun castle.  There will also be giveaways of school supplies, shoes, books and gift certificates from Hamilton businesses, including Ashley’s Lemonade vouchers.

Food vendors will also be on hand so that you can pick up a late lunch or an early dinner while enjoying the fun of the fair.

This event is free to all and you are encouraged to come early for the best of the giveaways.

0904 Celebrating Diversity in Bermuda

Under the direction of Pastor Dejaun Tull, Director of Intercultural Ministries, The Intercultural Ministries of the Bermuda Conference of Seventh-Day Adventist is hosting the community event, Celebrating Diversity in Bermuda on Sunday, September 4th.

Running from noon until 5pm in the Bermuda Institute Auditorium, this family-friendly event will open with a Parade of Nations.  Some of the countries/regions to be represented are Bermuda, Jamaica, Peru, Africa, Italy, Puerto Rico, Cambodia,  Colombia, Philippines, Canada, and the USA, to name a few.  Community participants will be dressed up in their ethnic or national dress representing their country, and some will feature music and folkloric dances.

There will be a variety of vegetarian food available for sampling, and this will represent some of the various countries and regions.

Admission is free and the cost for food is $5 for an adult plate and $2 for a child plate.  You will be provided with tickets and may select a food sampling from each region.

Take advantage of the Labour Day holiday as ÜberVida Ltd. would like to cordially invite you to the first of their Fashion Party Series on Sunday, September 4th.

The boat will depart #1 Dock on Front Street at 7pm.  From then until the boat returns at 10pm, you can expect open format music with a definite emphasis on house and dance, courtesy of DJ Felix of The Big Chill and DJ Denis Ocean.  In addition, special Patrón/CÎROC cocktails available, fashionable bottle prices will be available on Moët & Chandon, and there will also be a Red Carpet Entry with photography by Bryant Richards.  The dress code is Fashionable.  Pre-Labour Day (Monday is a Holiday)

The Vernon Temple Woman’s Day Committee invite you to enjoy a Back to School Free Movie Night on Friday, September 9th.

From 7pm in the The Gazebo at Vernon Temple AME Church, you can get the family together and enjoy a fun movie screening of Disney’s Zootopia.

Refreshments, including hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, popcorn, drinks and baked goods, will be available for purchase.

There is no cover charge and everyone is welcome.

0911 Gombey Festival

Ayo!  Dance and drum your way to the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium for the Gombey Festival on Saturday, September 10th.

Doors to the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium will open at 5pm, with the opening acts at 5.30pm, followed by the Presentation of Awards and Gombey Festival at 6pm.

This year, Tyrone Alexander “Funk” Nesbitt will be honoured, while celebrating the best in Gombey culture past and present. There will be food vendors and fun for the whole family.

The rain date will be on Sunday, September 11th.

This event is free and open to all.

0911 Richard Allen AME Womens Day

Join Rev. Lorne K.E. Bean, Sis. Rochelle Bean and the Richard Allen church family for their 2016 Women’s Day Celebrations on Sunday, September 11th.

With the theme, Transforming Pain into Praise, Isaiah 61:3, the guest preacher will be Rev. Dr. Kim W. Anderson from the Metropolitan AME Church Harlem, NY.  As well as an 11am Worship Service, there will also be a special 9/11 Service at 4.30pm.  Both services will be held at Penno’s Wharf at the St. George’s Ferry Terminal.

Lunch will be served at a cost of $15, or free for children aged 10 and under.  Refreshments will be served after the 4.30pm service.

0912 Red Wine Tasting Series

Red Steakhouse and Bar invite you to join them for 5 weeks of unforgettable wines and a fine selection of canapes, perfectly chosen to match each wine at their series of Wine Tasting events, starting on Monday, September 12th.

Each week will have a different theme with exquisite wines from across the globe.

The series will kick off with A Sparkling Show on Monday, September 12th, an opportunity to taste refreshing, palate cleansing bubbles.

Think you know your grapes? Try to guess the country during an fun and interactive night at their Blind Tastings on Tuesday, September 20th (Chardonnays) or Monday, September 26th (Pinot Noirs), and you might be pleasantly surprised!  Guess all wines correctly and win a prize.

The last 2 weeks on Tuesday, October 4th and Monday, October 10th will be exploring the sumptuous wines of Italy at White Wines of Northern Italy and Red Wines of Northern Italy, respectively.

To wrap it all up, let their chefs transport you to the romantic countryside of Italy at their 5 course Italian Wine Dinner on Thursday, October 20th.

0915 Yoga Getting Down to Basics

Aimed at first-time beginners, those with limited experience and those who would like a back-to-basics refresher, Yoga on the Rock and LivingYoga are offering Getting Down to Basics: New Beginners 12-Week Course, starting on Thursday, September 15th.

Running from 5.30pm until 7pm on the 15th and from 3pm until 4.30pm on Saturday, September 17th, the courses are designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to poses, breathing practices, deep relaxation and meditation. Alternate options for individual body types will be explored to enable students to develop awareness and build confidence in the practice of yoga specific to individual needs. The courses are taught by 500hr. Yoga Alliance-certified teachers.

The cost is $260 per course.

Help raise funds for Bermuda’s only home care cancer charity by participating in P.A.L.S Mad Hair Day on Friday, September 16th.

There are two ways to participate.  Firstly, you can donate $5 to wear your hair in a mad or crazy way for the day and you will receive a sticker for helping this charitable cause. Participating in this event requires registering your company, group or school.

If you donate $35, then you can also let your mad hair down at the Mad Hair Day After Party at  the Docksider Pub and Restaurant.

From 6pm, you can enjoy a free photo booth, welcome drink, Mad Hair Day Wigs and Raffles for sale, and be in with a chance to win prizes for best Mad Hair, with categories including Wackiest, Most Beautiful, Best Group Effort, Most Creative and Scariest Mad Hair.

1015 Bermuda Guild of Stitchery

Meet new people, have great food and view needlework done by guild members at the Bermuda Guild of Stitchery Bi-Annual Tea and Sale on Saturday, October 15th.

From 10am until 3pm at the First Baptist Church on Middle Road in Devonshire, there will also be handmade items for sale.

Tickets are $10 and will be sold in advance and at the door.  All proceeds will be donated to PALS.
