July 12th, 2017 Bermuda Calendar Update

Viva La France! L’Alliance Francaise des Bermudes invites all; members and friends, Francophones and Francophiles, to join them for their French-style, Bastille Day – Diner en Blanc, on Friday, July 14th.

This event will begin at 6.30pm with cocktails followed by dinner at 8pm at Coco Reef on the stunning South Shore. There will be a cash bar and the dinner menu includes a salad bar, Rib-Eye Beef Carving and Grilled Jumbo Shrimp, a selection of French desserts, followed by tea or coffee.

This year’s theme is ‘Soiree Diner en Blanc’ by the ocean and the dress-code is white, smart-casual. There will be live french music, a raffle and door prize.

Tickets cost $85 for adult members or $95 for adult non-members, and $40 for child members or $45 for child non-members (between ages 5 and 11). The Bermuda Aquarium Museum & Zoo invite you to join them for Grill Master & Happy Hour at AZU Beastro on Friday, July 14th.

From 6pm until 9pm at the AZU Beastro inside BAMZ in Flatts Village, the whole family can enjoy a fun and relaxing evening in the wonderful setting, featuring spectacular views and a playground where kids can play.

Grill Master is the new concept they are introducing to their Happy Hour.
You, or one of your friends can be the Grill Master for your group to ensure that all of your food is cooked just to your liking.  You can choose from an array of meats and seafood to grill, enjoy a salad buffet, sides and complimentary sauces & condiments.

All are in for a huge blessing when the Restoration Fellowship hosts their weekend-long conference themed Learning to Hear and See in the Spirit, starting on Friday, July 14th.

The conference begins at 7.30pm within the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI, continuing on Saturday, July 15th at 10am and 7.30pm and concluding on Sunday, July 16th at 10.30am. Featuring special guest speaker, Minister Ana Werner, this event promises to be a memorable occasion.

Admission is free and pre-registration is not required.

Due to the resounding popularity of the last eight, Hiscox in collaboration with the Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB), are once again celebrating youth cricket, raising money for the BCB’s youth cricket programs, and bringing our local community together by hosting Hiscox 11&Under Celebrity Cricket Festival on Saturday, July 15th.

From 8am until 4pm at the National Sports Centre North Field, there will be lots of free activities for kids; including face painting, bouncy castles and zip lining, a free BBQ, and free t-shirts. Sports celebrities, radio commentators, government ministers and national cricket team players will battle it out against the Under 11’s All Star Team- and you are invited to come out and cheer for your team on what promises to be a family fun day!

At 8am, the festival will begin with an 11&U skills and drills competition, followed by The Celebrity vs 11&U All-Star game at 1pm.

This is a free community event and there will be raffles for sale- all proceeds will go towards the youth league.

Doors open 7pm at Earl Cameron Theatre, and starting at 7.30pm the two fools Nadanja & Jah are going back to the 90s, to take on the “Class Clownz” Nisanthi & L.A.

BUEI Screens presents the film I, Daniel Blake, on Sunday, July 16th. **UPDATE: This event will now take place on Sunday, July 23rd**

Winner of the 2016 Palme d’Or, 2017 BAFTA Award, and 2017 César Award, this film tells the tale of Daniel Blake (Dave Johns), a 59-year-old widowed carpenter who must rely on welfare after a recent heart attack leaves him unable to work. Despite his doctor’s diagnosis, British authorities deny Blake’s benefits and tell him to return to his job. As Daniel navigates his way through an agonising appeal process, he begins to develop a strong bond with a destitute, single mother (Hayley Squires) who’s struggling to take care of her two children.

The film starts at 5.15pm in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium. Harbourfront are offering a 10% discount (food only) to anyone dining there before or after the event.  The restaurant opens for dinner at 6pm.  Please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers.  For dinner reservations call 295-4207.

Willowbank invite you to join them at their weekly Sunday Sunset Supper Buffet, starting on Sunday, July 16th.

From 7pm until 9pm at the Willowbank Hotel & Resort in Somerset, the supper consists of a delicious Homestyle Buffet, including a complete Vegan Section and a non-alcoholic Mocktail Bar. They promise a relaxing atmosphere with live entertainment that varies weekly, featuring musicians Calvin Simons, Kenneth Cox, Michael Taylor and other guest artists.

The cost is $35 per person. This event will run every Sunday throughout the summer until further notice.

Guess What!? Scribbles Art Shack is on the move in July, bringing a Summer POP-UP Art Studio experience to the Warwick neighbourhood with the next event on Sunday, July 16th.

From 6:30pm until 8:45pm at the Rubis Gas Station overflow lot, you can pop by with the kids for an afternoon/evening of outdoors art fun.

Looking for something fun to do with the whole family? The BSoA are partnering with KBB to host another Trash Art Workshop called Plastics Gone Wild, on Saturday, July 22nd.

From 10am until noon at the Bermuda Society of Arts, adults and children over 8 years old are welcome to join in creating whimsical or statement pieces to help raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans.

This workshop is being taught by KBB’s Executive Director Anne Hyde, in preparation for the KBB’s Plastics Gone Wild: Trash Art Show, to take place two weeks later.

The workshop is free to attend, and all materials will be provided, including selections of beach trash. Spaces are limited so you are encouraged to register immediately to reserve your spot.

Lionfish cullers are you ready? “Eat ’em to Beat ’em” is the advice being given to us to deal with the pesky and destructive lionfish which have invaded our reefs and are harming the ecosystem.  That means that it’s time to dust off those spears and mark your calendars for the 7th Annual Groundswell Lionfish Tournament, taking place at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) on Saturday, July 22nd.

The tournament starts at sun up and all boats must be at the BIOS dock for the 3pm weigh-in.

From 2.30pm, all are invited to party-for-a-purpose at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), to enjoy a family-friendly afternoon of live music, lionfish tasting, a Gosling’s bar, lionfish handling demos, kids arts and crafts, and more, until 7.30pm.

Entry to this event is free. The tournament entry costs $25 per person and includes an epic t-shirt designed by Avarie Graham. To register, visit pTix.bm

To celebrate Women’s Golf Day, Fairmont Southampton is offering Complimentary Golf Sessions at Turtle Hill Golf Club on Wednesday, July 19th and Saturday, July 22nd.

The world’s number 1 par 3 course with 18 holes plays host to popular golf tournaments such as the Bacardi National Par 3 and the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship – and it is now opening its doors to the public for a complimentary experience.

These free sessions are for women and girls (10 years+) only, offering the options to play a round on the course or take a free lesson on their new practice area. This will be followed by socialising, networking and distribution of information regarding lessons, league play and hearing from speakers about ways to get involved in golf.

Enjoy watching the sky and hunting for the shooting stars of the Perseid’s Meteor Shower, with good fellowship and a dish of spaghetti prepared especially for you by Fr. Attilio, the Pastor of St. Michael’s Church, at Night of the Shooting Stars on Saturday, August 12th.

This event starts 9pm at St. Michael’s Rectory backyard, in Paget. You are invited to bring your own folding chair or a blanket to lean on the grass and, if you want, some snack food or beverage to share. All are welcome, regardless of status, nationality, colour or religion.

Join the St. Michael’s Parish Church to watch a unique and spectacular astronomical event, in good fellowship, at the Solar Eclipse 2017 Party on Monday, August 21st.

The party starts at 2pm within St. Michael’s Rectory backyard and garden in Paget. There will be a limited amount of special, sun-gazing eclipse eyeglasses available. You are advised to bring sunscreen, a little beach folding chair or a blanket to lie on the grass, and some food or beverage to share if you like.
