August 30th, 2017 Bermuda Calendar Update

 

Good morning troops! 

We’re nearly at the end of summer, can you believe it?! Here are the latest events to the Bermuda Calendar since last week. As usual, be sure to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.

 

 

 

 

Join Fairmont Southampton for the Re-Opening of Jasmine Cocktail Bar & Lounge on Friday, September 1st.

The popular hotel lounge will be closed from August 26, scheduled to re-open just a week later, with the same name but an updated look and feel. During the week-long closure, resort guests and locals will be redirected to an interim pop-up version in the Poinciana Foyer with selected menu and bar items.

Jasmine Lounge will re-open on Friday, September 1st at 11am.

Sous Chef Gerardo Say Colmenares’ new menu, “Cocktails & Cuisine of the Americas”, blends local Bermudian classics with innovative dishes inspired by the wider Americas region. Pan-American highlights include new delectable dishes such as Peruvian Lamb Meatballs, Bermy Burrito Sandwich, Shrimp Kebabs, Fiesta Platter, Pina Colada Cheesecake, and Bermuda Mai Tai Pitcher, alongside all-time favorites such as Jasmine’s popular light bites, burgers and flat bread pizzas.

The Berkely Educational Society will celebrate the 120th Anniversary of the opening of the Berkeley Institute with a Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, September 6th.

The school was opened on September 6th, 1897, and this will be the first in a series of events to occur over upcoming months.

The reception is from 6pm until 8pm in the History Room at Berkeley Institute (lower foyer).

Tickets cost $20 or $10 for seniors and can be purchased at the door or in advance from Shannons, The Berkely Insititute or by contacting Necheeka Trott.

The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity invites you to join them as they host a Lunch Time Recital Series starting on Thursday, September 7th.

From 12:30pm until 1:30pm at the iconic landmark on church street, the recitals will be held weekly featuring organists; Angela Sainsbury on September 7th, Owen Simons on September 14th, and Jonathan McBeath on September 21st. The final recital on Thursday, September 28th will be held at Wesley Methodist Church, featuring organist Llyod Matthew.

The series of concerts are being held in support of the restoration of the Cathedral organ, a project which has been ongoing for a number of years.

Admission is free, however, a donation in support of the organ restoration at the Cathedral will be greatly appreciated.

Join for what promises to be an unforgettable evening as BUEI Talks & The Family Centre presents: Stedman Graham: His Story on Thursday, September 7th.

His latest release, ‘Identity: Your Passport to Success’, was a Wall Street Journal Bestseller. His next book, ‘Identity Leadership’, will be released in summer 2018.

Designed for those wishing a gentle approach to yoga for therapeutic reasons the Yoga Centre will be offering Chair Yoga: A 6-Week Therapeutic Yoga Course starting on Friday, September 8th.

Running weekly on Fridays from Noon until 1pm until October 13th at the Yoga Centre on Victoria Street, this course is good for thorough relaxation and stress release, for those challenged with yoga on the mat, and as a guide to workplace yoga.

The class is taught by an internationally certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT), senior yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance (E-RYT-500) and meditation and yoga teacher and trainer.

The cost for the series is $165.

The Yoga Centre is offering a Prenatal Yoga for a Peaceful Pregnancy and Easful Delivery course starting on Saturday, September 9th.

Running weekly every Saturday from 1:15pm until 2:45pm until October 28th at their premises on Victoria Street, this 8-week prenatal yoga course is designed to help mothers-to-be remain healthy and active throughout the prenatal period with minimal stress and anxiety. The course is a mindfulness yoga class for moms so that they focus on themselves and on “just being” while enjoying the pregnancy and having some quiet and precious time with baby. The poses practiced are also designed to prepare moms-to-be for an easeful and safe delivery at the end of the prenatal period.

This course is taught by a senior experienced certified prenatal yoga instructor with the assistance of an ante-natal nurse/yoga teacher.

The cost of the series is $180.

The Community Education & Development Programme will be holding Fall Term Registration from Monday, September 11 until Friday, September 22nd.

Classes offered range from college preparatory, island permaculture, vehicle maintenance, to carpentry, tiling, masonry, and more.

Inviting all members of the public to a French film with English subtitles, the September edition of the monthly Ciné Club from L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be showing: Sur le chemin de l’école (On the way to school) on Tuesday, September 12th.

Starting at 8pm in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, this 2013 French documentary is 1hour and 17min long, directed by Pascal Plisson starring Jackson Saikong, Salome Saikong and Samuel J. Esther.

The film tells the tale of Jackson, the Kenyan; Carlito, the Argentinian; Zahira, the Moroccan; Samuel, the Indian: four children who live light years away from each other and who have never met but who have a common point: they have to cover tremendously long distances to reach their school. On foot, on horseback or in a wheelchair, but all with an extraordinary determination.

Tickets cost $7 for students and BUEI/AF members or $12 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased from BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop.

The Yoga Centre is offering an 8-week course specifically designed for trouble zones with Yoga Therapy for Hips, Pelvis, Legs & Feet starting on Wednesday, September 13th.

Running weekly on Wednesdays from 5:30pm until 7pm until October 4th, the course involves an individual assessment of each student and 8 weeks of group class work focusing on pain relief, structural realignment, core integration and yoga breathing to help improve the functionality of hips, pelvis, legs, and feet. The course is good for sciatica, piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint pain, IT Band issues etc.

This course is taught by a certified Yoga therapist, yoga teacher/trainer (E-RYT 500).

The cost of the series is $250, which includes 8 weeks of class work plus an individual assessment.

Geared to those new to yoga and/or those wanting to revive their practice and develop a regular routine, The Yoga Centre is offering a 12-Week Beginner’s Yoga Course starting on Thursday, September 14th.

Held weekly from 5:30pm to 7pm until November 30th, this course provides step-by-step instruction in the practice of yoga where students learn to; do the poses confidently, practice effective breathing techniques, effect deep relaxation skills to relieve stress and foster healthy sleep, practice mindfulness to improve concentration.

The instructor – a YACEP, E-RYT 500 Yoga Alliance instructor, yoga teachers trainer and certified yoga therapist (C-IAYT) – is equipped to work with all student abilities through adaptations, ensuring individual growth and safety first.

This cost of the series is $260.

The Yoga Centre on Victoria Street is offering a 12-Week Structure, Strength and Core Class starting on Saturday, September 16th.

Running weekly from 5:30pm to 7pm until December 2nd, this course is designed to ensure a steady foundation, notable strength and stability with a view to assist students to become more aware of their confidence, strengths, weaknesses (head to toe) and learn greater body awareness.

Individual adjustments to poses for greater confidence and safety and improvement in the look and feel of the poses is an intricate part of this course.

The cost of the series is $260 and yoga teachers will receive 18 CEU through Yoga Alliance when taking this course.

The ocean is calling….you to Mermaids at Tobacco Bay on Saturday, September, 16th.

From 2pm until 8pm at the beach in St. George’s, they are celebrating the mermaid spirit, summer, and the sea. They want to see the bay, the beach and the deck full of the most mermaidy women in Bermuda! So if you have a swimmable tail, mermaid costume, or even just a mermaid inspired bathing suit/ t-shirt or hair piece they invite you to dress up and join the party. Bring your sisters, your daughters and your girlfriends for what promises to be a family-friendly day of female fun.

In addition to hosting one of Bermuda’s Hottest female entertainers: DJ PM, the event will also see mermaid braids for the girls, face and body painting, seafood specials and Frose (like rose but better) for the adult mermaids only.

Admission to the beach property is free.

You are invited to a night of culture and theatre as the Bermuda National Trust & Memory Lane Productions presents: Johnnie Bread starting on Thursday, September 21st,  running until Saturday, September 23rd.

The first performance is from 7pm until 8:30pm at the historic property of Verdmont, where you’ll take a tour through time to discover what makes the Joell Johnnie Bread recipe so special. This interactive theatrical performance, starring local actors; Adam Gauntlett, Emily Ross, Claudia Hall and Jennifer Campbell, promises to be a must-see.

Verdmont is one of the most fascinating old houses in Bermuda and has remained virtually unchanged structurally for almost 300 years – the perfect stage for this production!

There will be three other performances; on Friday, September 22nd at 7pm
and on Saturday, September 23rd at 4pm and 6:30pm.

Support the Bermuda SPCA at their 2nd Annual Whiskers & Wine fundraising event on Saturday, October 7th.

From 7pm until 9.30pm at their premises on Valley Road, you can enjoy an evening of celebrating all living creatures with wine and cocktail creations from Twisted Spoon and Gosling’s, heavy hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment by Mike Hind, and a silent auction – all under the Bermuda stars. This event is for adults only and there will be a complimentary shuttle from St. Paul’s Church to and from the SPCA.

The cost is $65 per person which includes food and drinks, and tickets are available from pTix.bm.

Enjoy a fun-filled family day and get into the fall spirit at the Bermuda National Trust Farm Fest on Saturday, October 28th.

From 10am until 4pm on the grounds of their property Devondale in Devonshire, this event takes the format of an autumn community fair, highlighting the best of the season. There will be a variety of family-friendly activities including game stalls, arts & crafts, food stalls, tractor rides, 3-legged races, a costume parade and more!

This is a free event.
