Masterworks is pleased to invite you to a show of paintings by Bermudian artist, Terica Dillas, as they present EsoTerica: Go with the Flow, a Cafe Show Opening on Friday, July 6th.

Terica Dillas is a mother of four who turned to art as a form of therapy after the loss of a loved one. Sadness and frustration can turn to pride and satisfaction when lost in the action of painting. Terica’s mood, whether jubilant or reflective, is illustrated by a palate of brilliant colour and sparkling metallics. The physical movement of stretching the paint across the canvas, using a technique called string pulling, allowed Terica to embrace a newfound freedom within art. The technique requires a delicate hand and a final composition embraces the balance of movement and colour. This is Terica Dillas first show.

The opening reception will be held from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Salty Lime (formerly Homer’s Cafe) inside Masterworks Museum.

For more information, call 299-4000 or email artmworks@logic.bm.

A charity event sponsored by Tempest Bistro, Long Story Short and Premier Tickets,  Eat Good Food. Help Dominica will be held on Saturday, July 14th.

On Monday, 18 September, 2017, in the dead of night, category 5 Hurricane Maria bore down on the Caribbean Island of Dominica and lashed it for hours. Torrential rain and 160mph gusts tore off roofs, smashed through walls, uprooted trees and lifted roads. Communication towers snapped in two, schools were flattened and electricity cut. Nothing was spared.  In the few short hours between sundown and sunrise, the 29-mile by 16-mile “Nature Island” – which boasted dozens of waterfalls, rainforests, nine active volcanoes and 365 rivers – was reduced to rubble, lurching from tropical paradise with a burgeoning eco-tourism sector to abject poverty and ruin in a single night. Ninety-five percent of buildings were damaged or completely destroyed. Recovery has been underway, but nearly 8 months later there are still communities living without electricity and access to the building materials they need to repair their homes, including the small village of 600 people in Morne Prosper.

From 7pm until 11pm at Tempest Bistro, you can enjoy a 4-course, Caribbean-inspired feast in good conscience knowing that full proceeds raised will be donated to the Morne Prosper Town Council.

Tickets are $150, and the cost includes gratuities, a welcome cocktail and post-dinner dancing.  Tickets can be purchased from www.Ptix.bm/dominica

All of you locals will be VERY familiar with what Cup Match is all about but some newbies or tourists out there might be wondering why there is all this fuss over a game of cricket.

The Thursday is officially Emancipation Day and the Friday is Somer’s Day.  On the surface, Cup Match is a cricket game played on a two-day public holiday on the Thursday and Friday before the first Monday in August.  This means that for 2018, it is on Thursday, August 2nd and Friday, August 3rd.  It is much more than just a cricket game though and, when combined with the weekend, becomes a four-day celebration of all things Bermudian.

Cup Match pits the East of the Island, St. George’s, against the West, Somerset, and alternates venues every year.  2018 will be played at Somerset Cricket Club and next year will be at the Wellington Oval in St. George’s.  You will be able to spot St. George’s fans by their light blue and dark blue attire while Somerset will be in red and blue.

Even those who aren’t fans of cricket attend the game from 10am until 6pm each day to experience this uniquely Bermudian experience, soak in the carnival atmosphere, local food and drinks, see the outrageous fashions and to try their luck at gambling on the Crown & Anchor tables (only legal during Cup Match).

Tickets are available on the gate and are $20 for adults, $5 for children aged 5 to 12.

For more information, contact Somerset Cricket Club on 234-6327, or somersetcricket@ibl.bm.

St. Michael’s Church invites you to join them for The Night of the Shooting Stars on Sunday, August 12th.

Moonset is forecast for shortly after 9pm, and with the New Moon so close these will be ideal conditions to watch Perseid’s shooting stars shower the sky – predicted to see over 60 shooting stars per hour when at it’s peak, if the weather allows.

From 7pm, the church’s facilities be open and light refreshments will be available. Come anytime at your leisure and feel free to bring something to share and a low chair or blanket to lay down on the lawn to watch the sky. The church will remain open until the last person leaves the grounds.

This is a free event.

For more information, contact 232-2166 or stmichaelsbermuda@gmail.com.
