It’s another jam-packed update for you all this week – and this is only the events in Bermuda that have been added to the calendar since last week!

Enjoy the iconic Sunset Beach BBQ at Cabana at Fairmont Southampton every week throughout the summer from Wednesday, May 10th.
From 6pm until 9pm each week, you can listen to live island entertainment as you choose your favourites from the hot fire pit, including grilled wahoo wrapped in Bermuda banana leaves, St. Louis-style BBQ pork ribs, and Caribbean grilled chicken, complimented by delicious sides such as calamari salad, mac & cheese and corn on the cob. Then you can watch the waves crash on their private beach next to Horseshoe Bay as you sample some of the dessert buffet selections. Cabana Bar & Grill is also open from 11am until 5pm daily.

The Bermuda Zoological Society invite you to the latest in their BZS Lecture Series, Bermuda’s Reefs: Corals, Marine Plants and Fish Interact to Keep our Marine Life Healthy on Wednesday, May 10th.
Dr. Thaddeus Murdoch of the Bermuda Reef Ecosystem Analysis and Monitoring (BREAM) Programme will give a talk presenting the results of their first system-wide survey of Bermuda’s fishes and coral reefs and discuss how corals, marine plants, parrotfishes and groupers interact to keep Bermuda’s marine life healthy in the face of local and global threats.
Doors open at 6.30pm and the lecture will begin at 7pm in the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo Education Classroom and is suitable for both adults and young adults.

In celebration of this year’s Heritage Month theme, Our Sporting Heritage, seize this opportunity to meet and have dialogue with Bermuda’s living football legend at Not Just Another Book Club: A Book Signing and Discussion with Clyde “Bunny” Best on Thursday, May 11th.
Hosted by the Bermuda National Library in collaboration with the Bermuda Football Association’s Technical Development Director Maurice Lowe, this will take place at the Bermuda National Library from 6pm until 8.30pm with Clyde “Bunny” Best, local and international football legend and top selling author of The Acid Test.

Putting a spotlight on the amazing achievements of people of African descent – inventions, innovations and creativity born of genius – Global Black Inventions will take place on Friday, May 12th.
Even more profound, through these inventions, the history and culture of Black people will be told. From 6pm until 8pm at Wesley Methodist Church, this promises to be an unmissable academically-documented, informative and entertaining presentation where everybody learns something.

From 7pm until 10pm at the Rhythm Lab, next to St. George’s Community Centre, this fundraiser event features live jazz music from the band Stiletto 5 and jazz saxophonist, Dr. Keith Lee. Also, a delicious and healthy vegan buffet dinner, freshly brewed herbal beverages, and creative desserts will be prepared in-house for their guests.

Big Band is back for the 20th Annual Some Enchanted Evening: Big Band Concert on Saturday, May 13th.
From 8pm in the Harbourview Ballroom at the Hamilton Princess, you are invited to dust off those dancing shoes for a night of toe tapping, ever swinging jazz, enjoying the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Tommy Dorsey. Swing night will feature international musicians Dave Ballou, Albert Rivera and Joe Beaty, accompanied by some of your favorite local artists to form a 16 piece ensemble that’s sure to delight.

Taste the flavours of Bermuda at a special Mother’s Day Wild Edible Tour and Tasters Event on Sunday, May 14th.
From 2pm until 4pm along Bailey’s Bay Bridge Trail, you can learn of the various edible plants that grow throughout our island and their health benefits. St. George’s are welcoming their first overnight ship in May, making it a perfect time to kick off the awesome happy hour experience, Cocktails and Cannons at Fort St. Catherine, starting on Tuesday, May 16th.
From 6pm until 8.30pm, all are welcome to attend this event that’s sure to be a blast (pun intended), with live music, vendors, and amazing Bermuda-inspired cocktails crafted by Twisted Spoon Cocktail Co., all with a sunset and ocean backdrop. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Have a good knight at The Bermuda Chess Championship 2017, starting on Tuesday, May 16th.
From 7pm in the IAS Building East, this is a Swiss system in 7 rounds. There will be 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.
This event will continue every Tuesday night until June 27th.
The registration fee is $50 and the prize fund is $500.

Enjoy a night of dancing, eating and drinking under the stars to celebrate and support the progress of Bermuda’s first coral gardens at the Living Reefs Foundation Second Coral Garden Party on Friday, May 19th.
Taking place at Rosewood Tucker’s Point, there will be a free bar between 6.30pm and 7.30pm and live music from The Go Down Berries.
You’ll also have a chance to bid for unique prizes donated by America’s Cup teams.

In celebration of the America’s Cup, The Garden Club of Bermuda is opening a Private Garden for Tours every Tuesday morning from May 23rd.
For six weeks, the tours will take place every Tuesday morning, with the gardens opening at 9.30am and closing at noon. Two tours are scheduled during that time, one at 10am and the other at 11am.
The first venue to be showcased will be two neighbouring properties on Hidden Lane, Pembroke on May 23rd – Westerleigh at 13 Hidden Lane and Rosapenna at 9 Hidden Lane. These will be part of the same tour.
The tours will continue weekly until June 27th, with the venue being announced each week.

The culmination of the Bermuda’s Heritage Month celebrations is, of course, the Annual Bermuda Day Parade, with this year’s theme being Our Sporting Heritage, on Wednesday, May 24th.
The 2017 Heritage Month theme is a celebration of Bermudian sporting heroes and Bermuda’s favourite sports and games. More than simply a past-time for children, sport has always been an opportunity for demonstrating determination, teaching teamwork, and exemplifying excellence. Whether you reflect on Bermuda’s nautical beginnings and current historic hosting of the America’s Cup, if you are a fan of football, or if you hit sixes at cricket, there is no denying the passion that sport inspires. Even amateur marble players, rope jumpers, and traditional game participants are part of the storied legacy of Bermuda’s sports. From the fierce loyalty to Cup Match teams, to the rallying unity to support a Bermudian Olympian, Bermuda has continued to build a sporting heritage to be proud of.
The parade will include all the usual favourites – floats, gombeys, majorettes, pipers, drum corps and dance troops- and will move along Marsh Folly Road from 1.30pm, and will continue right through to the top of Cedar Avenue. The parade then turns left onto Church Street, takes a right down Court Street, a right along Front Street, and finally up Queen Street. Groups will have a final performance at City Hall Car Park. Floats will make a right turn on to Church Street, park in front of City Hall and remain there on display throughout the afternoon.

Throughout its existence SeaKeepers has made it a practice to honour and promote those key decision makers and influencers who have made extraordinary commitments to preserving our planet’s oceans.
The evening will begin with a cocktail hour in the main lobby at BUEI, followed by a sit-down dinner at the neighbouring Harbourfront restaurant. An exclusive gathering of yacht owners will come together to recognise Wendy Schmidt, the 2017 SeaKeeper of the Year, against the electrifying backdrop of the America’s Cup celebrations. Masterworks invite you to join them for the official opening and book launch of Kelly Hunt’s Art of a Gombey on Friday, June 30th.
The official opening reception will be from 5.30pm until 7pm in the Rick Faries Gallery and the exhibit will run until July 19th. Inclusive of purchasing the book Kelly will also have original art form the book in the gallery for purchase.
Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 11am until 4.30pm on Sundays. Masterworks is closed on public holidays. General admission is $5, or free for members and children under 12.
