June 21st, 2017 Bermuda Calendar Update

Happy Humpday!

It’s Bri again, covering for Claire who will be on maternity leave for the next three months. Not to worry though, here are the latest events that have been added to the Bermuda Calendar since last week. Join a group of friendly expats and locals living in Bermuda, and enjoy a summer evening chilling out over the South Shore at InterNations Bermuda Chill Out at Henry VIII on Thursday, June 22nd.

This month, they will gather from 6pm until 9pm at Henry VIII restaurant, where you enjoy of the musical talents of The Big Chill, as you dance the night away.

At InterNations no-one stands alone, so you can feel comfortable coming on your own and be guaranteed of good conversation and new connections, or feel free to invite friends.

There is no cover charge so attendees will just have to purchase their own drinks. Bar food will also be available for purchase.

With so much good wine around nowadays, a little more knowledge can be a helpful thing! The Hamilton Princess Hotel has teamed up with one of Bermuda’s top suppliers, Burrows Lightbourn, to bring you Marcus’ Tuesday Night Flight, starting on Tuesday, June 27th.

Every Tuesday evening, from 5pm until 7pm, they will provide a great selection of wines and liquors for you to taste, learn about and enjoy.

The cost is $25, plus gratuities and reservations are recommended.

Another great opportunity to listen to entertaining presentations on a variety of topics, presented in a quick, easy-to-digest format, as the 19th Volume of the PechaKucha Night Bermuda will be on Thursday, June 22nd.

PechaKucha Nights were started in Japan and have a 20×20 presentation format where each speaker shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you talk along to the images. Since there is no pausing or going back, speakers have no choice but to keep to their allotted time. Following each presentation is a 3 minute 40 second Q&A session with the audience.

Doors open at 6.30pm and presentations begin at 7pm. This will take place at Warwick Workman’s Club, where there will be a cash bar and food available to purchase.

Admission is free however donations are welcomed and all are invited.

Rain or shine, Canadian-style fun on the beach comes of age at the Association of Canadians in Bermuda’s (ACIB) Annual Canada Day Beach Party Celebrating Canada’s 150 Birthday at Warwick Long Bay on Saturday, July 1st.

From noon until 6pm, they will be entertaining all their Canadian, Bermudian and everywhere-else-on-the-planet-you-are-from friends with music, food and beach action at this family-friendly event in celebration of their national holiday.

In addition to some loud and proud Canadian music, Canadian beer (plus other beers and coolers), Canadian gear (exclusive t-shirts and towels) and… lots of Canadians, eh! There will also be lots of prizes and giveaways from their sponsors and vendors.
There will be lots of drink options (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and extra food available for sale. Catering will be courtesy of Island Restaurant Group, recent winners of the Best of Bermuda award for Best Caterer, and will include their true summer BBQ sizzle lineup of tasty beef burgers, chicken breast burgers and hot dogs (bag of chips or spicy peanut coleslaw for side)

Membership to ACIB can be purchased for $25 on the day and gets you two beverages of your choice and one meal selection from the BBQ.

Promising a family-friendly event that you do not want to miss, The Bermuda National Athletics Association will be hosting the 2nd edition of the Bermuda Invitational Permit Meet on Saturday, July 1st.

From 6.30pm until 9pm at National Sports Centre, this is a professional track and field event where athletes from around the world descend upon our island for a display of amazing talent in the sport of track and field.

Events contested will be the Men’s 100m, 110m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, 3000m steeplechase, Long Jump, and Shot Put, and the Women’s 100m, 100m hurdles, 400m, 800m para, and high jump.

The men’s 100m, 200m, 800m, 3000m steeplechase and long jump will feature Bermuda’s Elite athletes Tre Houston, Tyrone Smith, Shaquille Dill, Kyle Webb and Bruce DeGrilla, while the women’s high jump and 800m para will feature Sakari Famous and Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis.

There will also be local relay races featuring Bermuda primary and middle school students and food vendors will be on site.

Tickets are $17 for general admission seating, $37 for covered reserved seating, $77 for VIP tickets, and are available from www.BDAtix.bm.  VIP tickets include reserved parking, meal, wine, meet and greet with athletes.

Come out to see the fireworks and join Discovery Wines as they celebrate with another 4th of July Wine Cruise on Tuesday, July 4th.

The cruise will be aboard the Ana Luna, which will depart from the dock at Grotto Bay at 8pm.  From then until the boat returns at 11:30pm, you’ll cruise around the Island while sampling six of their showcase wines and canapés from the USA.

Tickets are $85 per person and you are encouraged to reserve your place in advance.

The Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative of Bermuda in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development’s Department of ICT Policy & Innovation and Bermuda Economic Development Corporation are conducting Biz Camp 2017 for aspiring young entrepreneurs, starting on Tuesday, July 6th.

From 9am until 3pm at Bermuda College’s Tech Hall, this camp for teens between the ages of 13 and 18, will run from July 6th to 14th, and July 17th to 25th, not including weekends.

Participants will learn how to take their potential business idea, put it through testing, and build a business plan to turn their idea into a viable business. There will also be presentations from local entrepreneurs on life as an entrepreneur and tips on how to gain success in running their business.

This camp is free and registration forms can be found online at BEDC.BM. Completed forms can be emailed to ictpolicy@gov.bm.

Celebrating 45 years of bringing Bermudian dancers and international stars together to provide unforgettable performances, the Bermuda Civic Ballet is proud to present Civic @ 45 on Friday and Saturday, July 28th and 29th.

Showtime is at 8pm each night at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall.  This summer, visiting artistes from Japan and Europe will feature with the best of Bermuda’s dancers, in a blend of classical and modern dance.

Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 for seniors, $20 for students under 18, and are available from www.pTix.bm or 278-1500.
