November 28th, 2018 Bermuda Calendar Update

Good morning Bermuda!

The Christmas season is officially upon us and the calendar is quickly filling up with lots of festive events. Here’s your weekly update with all of the new events that have been added since last week, and as always, don’t forget to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of everything that’s upcoming.

Visit the Clocktower Mall in the Royal Naval Dockyard to experience the artwork and creativity on display by local primary and middle schools who have entered in the Festival of Trees Competition

The Festival of Trees Competition showcases 6 local schools competing for cash prizes. Their placements are entirely based on your votes, so come on out and show your support for their hard work.

Public voting is open daily from 10am until 5pm until December 1st. Ballots are located by the stairs inside the Clocktower Mall.

The winner will be announced at their Inaugural Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2nd, and the trees will remain up for public viewing until December 31st.

While you’re perusing the Christmas Trees, be sure to take a look at what the Clocktower Mall has to offer this holiday season.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and the gallery is temporarily closed on Sundays. Masterworks is closed on public holidays, including December 25th and 26th, but will be open on January 1st for their annual New Year’s Open House.

Sophia Cannonier invites you to the launch of her new book, The Home Birth Movement on Tuesday, December 18th.

In an effort to transform Bermudaʼs complicated relationship with birth, this book dives into the countryʼs history of midwifery, the rise of childbirth hospitalisation and medicalisation, and the ideological challenges facing childbirth and home birth rights currently. Through the personal and emotional stories of Bermudian mothers and fathers, this book artfully weaves together the voices that initiated and perpetuated the home birth movement in Bermuda at the turn of the century – a movement that continues to grow.

From 6pm at the Bermuda National Library, the author, Sophia Cannonier, will sign copies and answer questions about the book. The book will be available for purchase for $20.

The event is free and is intended as a way to raise public awareness about birth rights. Refreshments will be served.

Sophia Cannonier is a Bermudian mother of three, Certified Midwife Assistant, Birth Doula CD(DONA), Birthing from Within Mentor, Pilates and Yoga Teacher Trainer, Feldenkrais Practitioner, and Director and Founder of LOTUS: Mind Body Spirit and Wellness Center. Sophia has birthed all three of her children at home without medical intervention, and she continues to advocate locally and internationally for the protection and expansion of maternity and childbirth options.
