Happy Hump Day Bermuda! 

We are at the heart of love month and today’s post includes a variety of Valentine’s Day events for you to consider. So without further adieu, here is your weekly update with all of the latest events that have been added to the Bermuda Calendar since last week. Don’t forget to also check out the Quick Recap section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.

 

 

You’re invited to a Show Opening at Masterworks: Secrets Within a Sketch on Friday, February 15th.

This dual show will be on display in the Rick Faries Gallery, showing works by Masterworks Education Coordinator Nuno Patricio, and well-known local artist Emma Ingham.

The Opening Reception is from 5:30pm until 7pm. Admission is free and donations are welcome. All pieces will be available for sale.

Opening hours are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and the gallery is temporarily closed on Sundays. Masterworks is closed on public holidays.  General admission is $5, or free for members and children under 12.

Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club is celebrating Black History Month at Marcus’ restaurant on Wednesday, February 13th and Saturday, February 23rd.

On both of these days, from 7pm until 9pm you can join them in honouring two extraordinary Bermudians: Sir John Swan and Dame Jennifer Smith. The former premiers of Bermuda will provide an enlightening insight into Bermuda’s history in an intimate three-course dinner.

Dinner with Dame Jennifer Smith takes place on Wednesday, February 13th. Dinner with Sir John Swan takes place on Saturday, February 23rd. **UPDATE: Dinner with Sir John Swan has sold out**

For those who can’t make it to either event, a special menu, chosen by Sir John and Dame Jennifer, will be available at Marcus’ all month long.

The cost per dinner, per person is $90 plus gratuities, or $130 including wine pairings, plus gratuities. Tickets are available at www.Ptix.bm.

Part proceeds will be donated to charities of the honourees’ choice.

The February Mid-Term JUMP Camp will be held at Victor Scott Primary School from Monday, February 11th until Friday, February 15th.

JUMP CAMP is considered to be one of the most fun camps on island and this break, kids (between the ages of 6 and 17) can join their world champion international JUMP staff for an all out blast!

The camp runs daily from 8:30am until 3pm, with After Camp available from 3pm until 5:30pm.

The cost is $150 for the week, plus $100 for After Camp. The daily rate is $30, or $50 with After Camp.

Aboard Bermuda’s national icon, the Spirit of Bermuda, you can enjoy a romantic Valentine’s Sunset Sail cruise on Thursday, February 14th.

Departing at 5:30pm from Albouy’s Point, you can embark on a voyage designed to tantalise your senses with all the romantic elements this Valentine’s Sail has to offer. Immerse yourself in the tropical rhythm of the sea and delight your palate with a bevy of canapés and sweets.

Singles and couples and invited to Brew for a night of sipping wine, painting and laughter at Galentines on Thursday, February 14th.

From 6pm until 9pm at the restaurant at 53 Front Street, you can expect a fun and interactive event, with Scribble’s Art Shack there to give you guidance and tutorials throughout the evening.

The cost is $80 per person and includes 2 glasses of wine, a shared flatbread (between two) and all materials provided for painting. Part of the proceeds of this event will go towards the Bermuda Heart Foundation.

Masterworks Museum invites you to explore the power of imagery and narrative by Sketching with Sandra Vlock on Saturday, February 16th.

Starting at 10am at Masterworks Museum, you’ll meet their visiting artist, Sandra Vlock, and spend time collecting stories and impressions of the island through sketching ‘en plein aire’ in the Botanical Gardens.

Sandra, an acclaimed architect and visual artist, is a great advocate of sketching, a discipline that she takes with her all over the world. In a short amount of time, usually 20 minutes, Sandra likes to sketch visual notes which in themselves have stories to tell. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to perhaps see sketching in a new light!

The event is free to attend. You will need to bring a sketchbook or paper, your favourite drawing instruments, comfortable attire and a blanket or chair to sit on.

The Rain Date is scheduled for Sunday February 17th.

BUEI Films presents: They Shall Not Grow Old on Tuesday, February 19th.

Peter Jackson directs this homage to the British troops of the First World War with never-before-seen-footage of soldiers as they faced the fear and uncertainty of frontline battle in Belgium. Digitally remastered and now in color, the footage has been studied by lip reading experts whose transcripts were recorded and used as audio for the film. Overlayed by narrative of those who partook in the war from interviews made in the 1960s and 1970’s, this historic revisiting marks one hundred years since the end of the great war.

The film starts at 7:30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium.

Tickets are $20 for Members, $25 for Non- members, and $12 for Students. Tickets are available from BUEI’s Oceans Gift Shop and are non-refundable within 24 hours of the event.

The Loren invites you to a Winter Wine Dinner: Slow, Low, & Bio with Chef Tim Sullivan and Mat Macdonald from Two Rock Wine Company on Friday, February 22nd.

Kids can be inspired by the artists in the Masterworks Collection at Young @ Art on Saturday, February 23rd.

Running from 9am until noon at the museum in the Botanical Gardens, the event is best for children between the ages of 5 and 12, but all are encouraged to come out. Kids will learn the history of the art on display in the Gallery, the artists’ techniques, and then create their own artwork based on what they’ve learned.

The event is free and adult supervision is required. Child friendly snacks will be available for purchase by Bermuda Cupcake Company and Salty Lime will be open.

Girlguiding Bermuda’s annual Thinking Day Service and Parade to celebrate the birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting and his wife, will take place on Sunday, February 24th.

Leaving from City Hall at 2:30pm, the Girl Guides will make their way to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity for the church service which starts at 3pm. The Girl Guides are also celebrating 100 years of Guiding in Bermuda and will be joined by other uniformed Youth Groups, such as the Scouts, the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigades and the SDA Pathfinders and Corp of Drums. Following the service, at around 4:15pm, they will march again to Front Street for the lowering of the Girl Guide World Flag.

This is a free event and all are welcome.

If you are interested in learning more about the IMPACT Mentoring Academy (IMA), they are hosting an Open House on Wednesday, February 27th and Thursday, February 28th.

This will be held from 8:30am until 10:30am, on both days, at their premises on Berkeley Road. During the open house, you and your child will be able to participate in their morning routine, receive a tour of the school and learn what makes IMA different.

The Grateful Bread, a community action dinner program to help heal racial and social divisions in our society, will be hosting a free dinner for those in need on Thursday, February 28th.

Doors open at 5:45pm at Astwood Hall, adjacent to St. Andrews church on Church Street (opposite HSBC), and service will start promptly at 6pm. Food is served by ticket number until all food is gone. There will also be free giveaways of clothes, shoes, household items, toiletries and more. The event finishes at 7:30pm.

The free meal is provided by the generous donations of their volunteers. Additional volunteers are still needed so sign up to help give back.

Discover the Island’s untold legacy on the African Bermuda Dispersion Cultural Bus Tour on Saturdays, March 2nd and March 9th. **UPDATE: Both event days are sold out**

The tour starts promptly at 10am, departing from the Hamilton Ferry Terminal. You’ll be taken to visit sites of interest along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, including: Barr’s Bay Park, Mary Prince’s home, the Theatre Boycott Sculpture, Verdmont House, Jeffrey’s Cave in Spittal Pond, and the Sally Bassett Statue. The tour ends at 1pm, returning to the Ferry Terminal.

You are challenged to brave the cold, take the plunge, and help empower girls through education at the Great Bermuda Penguin Swim on Sunday, March 3rd – possibly the coldest time in Bermuda.

The event starts at 3pm at John Smith’s Bay, and you can be one of the brave souls that takes a dip to raise money for the Hope Academy for Girls School in Sierra Leonne (www.hopeacademy.sl). Elevating Hope, a Bermuda registered charity (#T2033), is raising $50,000 to build a library, computer room and a boundary wall to secure this self-funded school for underprivileged girls.

Promising an event that you don’t want to miss, The Caravan Entertainers Awards Luncheon will be held on Sunday, March 17th.

Dale Butler is Bermuda’s leading music historian and he has been honouring local entertainers since 1976. As the head of Atlantic Publishing House, his book ‘Music on the Rock’ has highlighted the numerous entertainers who performed all over the island.

Starting at 1:30pm at The Leopards’ Club, he will highlight the contributions made by Wendell “Shine” Hayward (saxophone), Wendy Flood (Piano, singer), Professor Keith Caisey (international Super Star and Percussionist), Dennis Fox (piano), Nick Swan (drums) , Ronnie Lopes (drums) and Eugene “Stacker” Joell (guitar). Live music entertainment will will be provided by the Band Paradise.

The Bermuda Football Association (Charity #331), in partnership with CP Athletic Development (Charity #955), will host a Corporate Futsal Challenge on Saturday, April 6th.

Running from 10am to 6pm at the Somersfield Academy Gymnasium, this will be the first annual Corporate Futsal Challenge and promises a free, fun and fair atmosphere, with corporate co-ed teams vying for the top spot to be named the 1st Place Winner of 2019.

In addition, the event will highlight players enrolled in Youth Futsal programs in an exhibition match during the lunch period.

There is no admission fee for spectators, and the cost to enter is a $750 registration fee for a team of ten players. Part proceeds from the event will be used to fund the CP Athletic Development Scholarship Program.

Under the distinguished patronage of Mrs Nikita Robinson, Atlantic Publishing House and The Leopards’ Club will present The Crystal Butterfly Awards on Sunday, April 7th.

From 1:30pm until 4:30pm at Cedarbridge Academy, awards will be given to eight Bermudian female writers in recognition of the 25th anniversary publication of the book “Transitions Voices of Bermuda Women” which was the first, and to date, only book of women’s writing in a collection of this nature.Lunch will be provided, as well as entertainment and a variety of vendors.
