Happy Hump Day Bermuda!

Here’s your weekly update with all of the new events that have been added to the calendar since last week. As always, be sure to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously covered in previous posts.

Following the success of the 2016, 2017 & 2018 Aerial Re Bermuda 7s, which saw more than a thousand college and high school athletes compete, the 2019 Bermuda 7s Tournament will include the multiple divisions, with each team guaranteed at least six matches during a two-day tournament commencing on Friday, March 15th.

Day 1 of the tournament is from 4pm until 9pm, at the World Class National Sports Centre.

Day 2 is from 9am until 6pm on Saturday, March 16th, and will see the teams advance from Day 1’s pool play into quarter final, semi final and final rounds. Six Nations will be streamed pitch side. This will be a Family Fun Day with bouncy castles, food concessions and more!

Bermuda Gymnastics Association are hosting it’s 9th annual Bermuda International Gymnastics Challenge on Friday, March 16th.

From 8:30am until 7pm at their premises on 35 Southside Rd in St. David’s, visiting clubs from Barbados, Cayman Islands, Canada, the United States and our local club will demonstrate a show of quality gymnastics.

Vendors including Ashley’s Lemonade and Water Hazard ‘BDA’ will be on site, selling refreshments. ‘Ace Girl’ hats will also be for sale.

The admission fee for spectators is $10 adults or $5 for children and seniors. Entry is free for children under 3.

The Chewstick Foundation invites you to experience their 2019 Spring Retreat on Ports Island, from Friday, March 15th to Sunday, March 17th.

The boat departs at 7pm from Albuoys Point, and they ask that you be there no later than 6:45pm. From there you’ll head to Ports Island to enjoy a weekend full of fun, games, community building, music, art, and creativity in a safe and family-friendly environment. The retreat seeks to provide a much-needed break from day-to-day life. You’ll return to the mainland on Sunday between 3-3:30pm.

The retreat package includes round-trip boat transportation to and from the island, indoor community accommodations, 6 meals – sponsored by Butterfield & Vallis, snacks, art supplies, workshops, and materials for the Retreat fireside, where all participants are encouraged to share a story, poem, song or skill before the always fun, sing-along vibe. Retreats also include separate youth activities and ample time for conversation.

Two very unique music groups from one of the most prestigious universities in the world – The Radcliffe Pitches and the Harvard Krokodiloes will make an appearance at The Waterlot Inn on Sunday, March 17th and Tuesday, March 19th.

On Sunday, starting at 7pm, The Radcliffe Pitches will perform a repertoire of jazz, swing, and boogie-woogie, inspired by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Harvard’s oldest female a cappella group was founded in 1975 and has since entertained various audiences with their cheerful toe-tapping tunes!

On Tuesday, you can hear the The Harvard Krokodiloes. The 12 tuxedo-clad male undergraduates, are Harvard University’s oldest and finest a cappella singing group, delighting audiences worldwide with their unique blend of a cappella harmony and humour. They have been travelling to Bermuda for over 40 years during their Spring Break, and are thrilled to show their musical skills at Waterlot Inn.

BUEI Talks presents: 5 Million Steps with Rory Gorman on Thursday, March 21st.

The United States’ Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. It is often described as the toughest trail in the U.S. Of the estimated 3,400 hikers who attempted the full AT ‘thru-hike’ in 2017, only 848 completed it. One of those was Bermuda’s Rory Gorman. Come hear how Rory, despite being a hiking and camping novice, accomplished this epic adventure. Hear about the gear he used and carried all the way, the people and wildlife he encountered, the highs and lows he experienced.

The talk starts at 7:30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium. Harbourfront opens for dinner at 5pm, and ticket holders are entitled to a 10% discount (food only) when dining there before or after the event.  Reservations are required.  Please mention the lecture when booking to avail of the discount and note that it cannot be combined with any other special offers. Naked Zero presents: Live Your Life On Purpose – a series of Numerology workshops designed to enhance your awareness with Jen Young, starting with Numbers Don’t Lie on Friday, March 22nd.

From 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Naked Zero on Old Cellar Lane, you can learn the language of numbers. In this workshop you will learn the meaning of the numbers 1-9, 11, 22, and 33, as well as the positive and negative aspects of each number. You will also learn the significance of your Personal Year, and information for planing each month. This information is most requested and promises to be invaluable when making current decisions, or planning for the year ahead. It is helpful to know your spouse/partner/children’s personal year as well…you will be better able to assist them with challenges and decisions.

The Waterlot Inn will host a Single Malt Whisky Dinner on Friday, March 22nd.

From 7pm until 10pm, you can join them for an evening of spectacular whiskies and dining. Brand manager Michael Fay of Burrows & Lightbourne will be your host and take you through the whiskies’ portfolio.The evening starts with an arrival whisky cocktail, followed by a sampling of several fine single malt whiskies, including: Aberfeldy 12 & 21, and Aultmore 12.

Dinner starts at 7:30pm, and Chef Gerardo Say Colmenares has prepared a special tasting menu to complement each whisky. A complementary glass of wine will be served with dinner.

The cost is $130 per person,  plus 17% gratuities.

Warwick Academy invite you to their Spring Fair & Artisan Market on Saturday, March 23rd.

This will take place from 10am until 3pm at the school, where you can join them for an exciting day of family fun, fair games, and shopping for local-made goods at the artisan market. Tasty treats will be provided by food vendors. For parking, use the entrance by Morgan Road.

For the 2nd annual Digital Leadership Conference the Department of ICT Policy & Innovation will continue the conversation about online abuse with Bermuda’s teens/pre-teens, by screening a Community Movie: The Cyberbully on Sunday, March 24th.

The film (rated PG-13) starts at 3pm in the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts. Counsellors will be available during and after the movie, should the need arise.

This propulsive, globetrotting thriller from acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom is a breathless tour through the shadowy underworlds and hidden realms of Pakistan and India. BUEI Films presents: Woman at War

on Sunday, March 31st.

Halla is a fifty-year-old independent woman. Behind the scenes of a quiet routine, she leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminum industry.
Right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything. Her application to adopt a child has finally been accepted and there is a little girl waiting
for her in Ukraine. As Halla prepares to abandon her role as saboteur and saviour of the Highlands to fulfil her dream of becoming a mother, she decides to plot one final attack to deal the aluminum industry a
crippling blow.

Bermudian Literature Classes with Dr. Angela Barry will continue with Module 4: A New Bermuda Emerges – ‘The Sailor and the Fox’ by Brian Burland, a four-week course starting on Tuesday, April 2nd.

Classes will be held weekly at the Library from 6pm until 8pm, until April 23rd.

The cost is $100 and registration is now open.

Sail Training Vessel ‘STV’ Spirit of Bermuda invite you to sign up for an Overseas Voyage as they sail to St. Maarten and Antigua on Wednesday, April 3rd. **UPDATE: Voyage has been cancelled.** 

Departing from Dockyard at 9am, willing passengers over the age of 16 can join them for a unique and memorable sailing experience.

Leg 1 of the journey is the Bermuda to Antiqua Delivery Voyage from April 3rd to April 16th.  A Bonus Trip to St. Maarten is included. The cost is $2,000.

Leg 2 is the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, from April 17th to April 23rd. Sailors will experience racing classic, vintage and traditional yachts. Some sailing experience is preferred. The cost is $1,800.

Leg 3 of the journey is the Bermuda Return Voyage from April 23rd to April 29th. No overseas sailing experience required. The cost is $1,200.

All proceeds will go towards 3rd Year Middle School Student Voyages.

Snorkel Park Opens for the Season with a line-up of exciting weekly events, starting on Monday, April 15th.

Every Monday and Wednesday evening, it’s Bonfires on the Beach, from 7pm until 11pm. Followed by Madd Mondays from 11pm until 3am.

Every Wednesday there’s a Wet Wednesday Raft-Up Party from noon until 4pm.

Every Thursday evening you can join The Tiki Beach Party from 7pm until 11pm. Followed by Industry Nights from 11pm until 3am, when Industry workers enter for free.

And there’s fun to be had for the whole family every Saturday, at Family Dayz from noon until 3pm.

General admission is $5, and toddlers (under 4 years) enter for free. Admission for Madd Mondays and Industry Nights is $10 and requires valid ID (18+).

Feel the excitement as Bermuda hosts the MS Amlin World Triathlon 2019 Series, an international sporting festival attracting the world’s best athletes with a series of events running from Thursday, April 25th to Sunday, April 28th.

The festival kicks off with the Opening Ceremony at the flagpole on Front Street, at 7pm on Thursday, April 25th. This family-focused evening will feature Bermuda’s young athletes and great local entertainers, as well as a Pasta Party and a special Triathlon Festival Harbour Nights. Hamilton retailers will also be open for late night shopping.

The RenaissanceRe Kids Duathlon starts at 6:30pm on Friday, April 26th, also on Front Street. Youngsters from 7 to 15 years old will compete, running and cycling in age groups, and experience the World Series signature blue carpet finish line.

The official Race Day is on Saturday, April 27th, starting at 7am on Front Street, where you can be within arms reach of elite sports professionals as they swim, bike and run through the streets of Hamilton. See Flora Duffy race on home soil again this year to defend her title. Special spectator viewing areas will be set up and Hamilton restaurants will host Triathlon events, so gather your friends and family and decide your viewing point early! The Amateur Age Group races begin at 7am with staggered starts throughout the morning. The Elite Men’s Race starts at 1pm and Elite Women’s Race at 4pm.

After the excitement of racing, Front Street will be transformed into a party zone as the Digicel After Race Fete will celebrate and round off the Race Day action.

The fun continues with a Shopping Festival on Sunday, April 28th, when Hamilton retailers will open from 10am to 5pm offering special in-store shopping experiences and prize draws for a shopping spree and travel vouchers.
