May 1st, 2019 Bermuda Calendar Update

Happy First of May, Bermuda! 

Hopefully we can expect all flowers and no showers this month (*fingers crossed*). Anyway, here is your weekly update with all of the latest events that have been added to the Bermuda Events Calendar since last week. As always, be sure to check out the Quick Recap Section at the bottom of this post for a full listing of all upcoming events, including those previously published in past posts.

There will be a Big Book Sale at the Youth Library on Friday, May 3rd, and Saturday, May 4th.

The sale starts at 10am on Friday, and 9am on Saturday. There will be books for all ages on sale, including audiobooks, and parent resource books.

Paperbacks are 0.50 and Hardbacks are $1. Or you can fill a brown paper bag for $15. Funds raised will go towards the Teen Advisory Board Program.

New exhibitions are opening at the Bermuda Society of Arts, on the top floor of the City Hall, on Friday, May 3rd.

Spring is in the air! In the Onions Gallery, BSoA member artists will showcase works of art in various mediums and styles, for the Members Spring Show. 

The Edinburgh Gallery will feature Beyond Water, a concept exhibit created by art teacher, Ms. Cristina Douglas (Capelo), and art student, Miss Julia Pimentel. Both artists are inspired by their love for the ocean and all the creatures connected to it.

Galleries A & B will feature the Senior Art Show, sponsored by Community & Cultural Affairs. This show celebrates senior aged artists and their artistic talents with submissions in various mediums.

An Opening Reception will be held from 5pm until 7pm at the gallery, and is free and open to the public.

Opening hours at BSoA are from 10am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, and from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays.

Marina Nights is back for another season at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, and going Mexican for the first month, starting on Friday, May 3rd.

Every Friday, from 5pm until 9pm, you are invited to join them for Tequila inspired cocktails, a Taco Station, Cinco de Mayo décor, and live music by The Big Chill.

The Mexican theme will continue throughout May on Fridays: May 3rd, May 10th, May 17th, and May 31st.

The last week, May 31st is Ladies’ Night and the first 50 ladies will receive a complimentary frozen strawberry Margarita.

There is no cover charge.

Bermuda’s youth will meet again for the annual battle of School’s Relay Classic at the National Sports Centre on Friday, May 3rd.

Races start at 5:30pm, commencing with the 4x100m relay heats. The top two teams in each heat, together with the next six fastest times, will qualify for the finals.

At 6:30pm, the 4x400m relay will not disappoint with schools competing to be crowned champions of the timed finals.

Last but least, at 8pm, the evening will end with everyone on the edge off their seats for the 4x100m finals.

Come out and see who will earn bragging rights and be crowned the 2019 champions in the 2019 School’s Relay Classics! Winning schools shall receive financial awards which shall go directly to the schools’ athletic programmes.

Bermuda Pacers Track Club have teamed up with AIG as the lead sponsor to host the event. There is no admission fee.

Wild Wing Wednesday is Popping Up at Bulli Social, to complement the Vibe & Paint: Cinco De Mayo Edition on Sunday, May 5th.

Wings will be available for purchase (cash only) between 2pm and 5pm, and they invite you to turn up and chow down with them. You can sign up for painting with Scribbles Art Shack to join in their special Cinco De Mayo Edition of Vibe & Paint, which starts at 3pm. But you don’t have to paint if you just want enjoy the wings, Happy Hour Specials, and DJ spinning your favourite tunes.

The next instalment in the Bermudian Heartbeats Lecture Series will discuss Native Americans in Bermuda on Tuesday, May 7th.

From 6pm until 7:30pm at BUEI, Dr. Linford D. Fisher, Associate Professor of History at Brown University and St. Clair “Brinky” Tucker, and author of ‘St. David’s Island, Bermuda: Its History, People and Culture’, will speak about The History and Legacies of the 17th Century Caribbean Indian Slave Trade.

BUEI Films presents Casablanca on Thursday, May 9th

The film tells the story of Rick Blaine, a cynical world-weary expatriate who runs a night club in Casablanca, Morocco during the early stages of WWII. Despite the pressure he constantly receives from the local authorities, Rick’s cafe has become a kind of haven for refugees seeking to obtain illicit letters that will help them escape to america. But when Ilsa, a former lover of Rick’s, and her husband show up to his cafe one day, Rick faces a tough challenge which will bring up unforseen complications, heartbreak and ultimately an excruciating decision to make.

The film begins at 7:30pm in the Tradewinds Auditorium.

Mothers Invited To Heal Together, a special prayer service for all mothers, grandmothers and godmothers who have lost children, will be held at the Hamilton Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Saturday, May 11th.

This will take place from 11am until noon. Join Dee-AH Iris (whose son Steven “Jireh” Iris was killed in 2013) for a special prayer and to receive a special gift. “Together we are a stronger force than if we act alone.” There will be professional support on hand and information on the resources available to help grieving mothers.

Treat your mom to Mother’s Day Brunch at Allen Temple AME Church on Sunday, May 12th.

From 1pm until 3pm in the Arthur S. Jones Auditorium, they are serving up brunch with a promise that mom will love it.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for youth (12 and under).

Presenting a perfect occasion to celebrate Mother’s Day, The Bermuda Philharmonic Spring Concert will take place at St. John’s Church on Sunday, May 12th.

Running from 4pm until 5pm, the program will include: Hoffmeister’s Viola Concerto- performed by Laura Springham; Piazzola’s Oblivion- performed by Haley Skurowski; Mendelssohn Octet; Elgar Serenade; and a curated selection of pieces by a Brass Quartet.

This is a family friendly event. Students 18 years and under have free admission while adult tickets are $35 at the door or in advance from www.Ptix.bm.

The Bermuda Philharmonic supports the development of local talent by bringing together promising students, adult enthusiasts, and professional musicians to perform classical favourites for the Bermuda community to enjoy. Profits from the concert will go towards the Geoffrey Tankard Scholarship, a dual-initiative fund that sponsors music students on a merit or financial-needs basis.

Fluid Fitness Water Aerobics Spring/Summer Schedule starts on Monday, May 13th.

Classes are held at National Sports Centre Pool on Sundays at 10:15 am; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 am; and Thursdays at 6:30pm.

Classes are also offered at Warwick Academy Pool on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7pm

The cost is $20 for drop-in sessions, or $140 for an 8-class punch card (valid for 4 weeks from time of purchase).

Another great Car Boot Sale at Peace Lutheran Church will take place on Saturday, May 18th.

From 9am until 2pm, there will be bargains galore. You can shop for second-hand clothing and shoes for everybody, lots of household items, toys, games, DVDs, CDs, jewellery, luggage and lots more. There will also be coffee and hot dogs for sale so you won’t go hungry while shopping.

Bermudian Author, Stephanie Williams, presents a dinner event in Celebration of Women and the recent launch of her co-authored book International Day of the Girl: A Walk in Our Life on Saturday, May 18th.

This will take place from 7pm until 10pm at The Leopard’s Club, where featured key note speaker Juanae Crockwell, will speak alongside a panel of phenomenal and inspiring females, including: Lesley George (author), Latasha Turner (author), Tina Laws (Bermudian), K’Maria Seaman (Bermudian), and Stephanie Williams (author). The participating panelists will speak on the following topics: Survival, Unmasking, Absolution, Turning Lemons into Lemonade, Doubt, Doing It Afraid, Fighting against all Odds, Never Give Up, and Diversity.

Bermuda will be the first stop on this international book tour. This event, like the book, promises to provide encouragement, inspiration, and hope, as each woman becomes transparent in sharing her story. The event is intended to honour all women and their stories of strength and amazing courage. The vision is that each guest will leave with an empowering feeling to chase their purpose.

The 16th Annual Bermuda Guitar Festival will feature two concerts on Thursday, May 23rd and Saturday, May 25th.

The concert on May 23rd is from 7:30pm until 9:30pm at BMDS Theatre, and will feature Tooz Company – a Violin and Guitar duo – playing Classic Rock arrangements by Queen, Santana and Sting, to name a few.

The concert on Saturday, May 26th is from 7:30pm until 9:30pm at St. Andrew’s Church. Local guitarist, Jerremiah Smith, will play classical guitar favourites plus original compositions. The Headlining act is Walter Rodrigues Jr, originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, who will play Jazz standards, hymns and popular songs on solo guitar.

Anchor restaurant invites you to join them for Happy Hour Fridays every week.
