Back by popular demand for a fifth showing, BUEI Screens presents: Red Joan on Monday, July 22nd.

Joan Stanley (Academy Award Winner Judi Dench) is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information – including details on the building of the atomic bomb – to the Soviet government for decades. As she is interrogated, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and beliefs: her student days at Cambridge, where she excelled at physics while challenging deep-seated sexism; her tumultuous love affair with a dashing political radical; and the devastation of World War II, which inspired her to risk everything in pursuit of peace. 2018 / Biography / R / 110mins

At 7:30pm the film begins in the Tradewinds Auditorium. You can even make a night of it as the Harbourfront opens for dinner at 6pm, and ticket holders are entitled to 10% off dinner (food only) before or after the film. Please call 295-4207 for reservations and be sure to mention the film. Cannot be combined with any other special offers.

Much is being said about diversity, cultural appropriation and race as pertains to yoga. Yet, where does one start? Why is it necessary to understand this now, and how do we approach these subjects using yoga as the subject and object of our discussions? You can find answers to these questions at the Intro to Yoga, Race and the Science of Meditation: A 4 Week Course offered by the Yoga Centre starting on Thursday, August 8th.

This intro course will touch on the history, tradition and legacy of yoga, cultural appropriation and the concern of the watered-down focus of Western yoga; and its impact on yoga technique and our world today. Themes of exploration also include meditation, jnana yoga and why non-dualism and its skill and practice is so valuable for both internal examination and external practical change of consciousness.

This course runs every Thursday from 7:30pm until 9pm at The Yoga Centre on Victoria Street. The course is suitable for the bravely curious and the curiously brave. Course material will accompany this training. A 20 minute meditation practice will begin the course each week.

It is a YACEP program taught by an E-RYT 500 teacher, YACEP provider and diversity training consultant and activist; and, meditation trainer of both Eastern and Western traditions. Yoga Alliance Teachers will receive 6 credit hours toward yoga alliance accreditation when taking this course.

The cost is $150.
