Join artsmithsbda on their latest creative venture: PawPaw Bermuda, a Book Launch & Art Exhibition at Gallery 117 on Thursday, September 12th.

Pawpaw Bermuda is a cookbook/artbook that focuses on a beloved aspect of Bermudian culture. Pawpaws have ensured island survival, not only as a source of nourishment and healing, but also as a contributor to the island aesthetic as an inviting paradise.

The Opening Reception is from 5:30pm until 7:30pm on the Thursday, September 12th. The exhibition will remain on display at Gallery 117, until September 27th.

The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 5pm.

Back for a second showing, BUEI Films presents: Maidentrip on Wednesday, September 18th.

This riveting documentary chronicles the life and adventures of 14-year-old Laura Dekker, who set out on a two-year voyage in pursuit of her dream to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. In the wake of a yearlong battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura explores the world in search of freedom and adventure. 2014 / NR / Documentary / 1hr 21min.

Bermuda takes on Guadeloupe in the Rugby Americas North Championship Caribbean Cup Final on Saturday, September 21st.

Gates open at 2:30pm at National Sports Centre, for a 3pm kick-off. Join for a jam-packed day of rugby, promising a great day out for the whole family.

BUEI Screens presents: Official Secrets on Sunday, September 22nd.

In 2003, in the lead up to the Iraq War, British intelligence specialist Katharine Gun (Keira Knightley) receives a memo from the NSA with a shocking directive: the United States is enlisting Britain’s help in collecting compromising information on U.N. Security Council members to blackmail them into voting in favour of an invasion of Iraq. The Bermuda Zoological Society invites you to join them at the next discussion in their lecture series A Conversation Dilemma: Seagrass and Green Turtles on Tuesday, September 24th.

The lecture will be presented by Dr. Sarah Manuel, Senior Marine Conservation Officer, Dept. of Environment and Natural Resources.

Dr. Manuel has been monitoring Bermuda’s seagrass meadows for over 15 years. She will talk about Bermuda’s seagrasses, the communities they support, the current status of Bermuda’s seagrasses and the impact of green turtles on this important habitat.

BUEI Films presents: The Right Stuff on Thursday, September 26th.

This adaptation of the non-fiction novel by Tom Wolfe chronicles the first 15 years of America’s space program. By focusing on the lives of the Mercury astronauts, including John Glenn (Ed Harris) and Alan Shepard (Scott Glenn), the film recounts the dangers and frustrations experienced by those involved with NASA’s earliest achievements. It also depicts their family lives and the personal crises they endured during an era of great political turmoil and technological innovation. 1983 / PG / Biography / 3hr 13min.

Support cancer care for all in Bermuda by participating in P.A.L.S. 8th Annual Mad Hair Day on Friday, September 27th.

Everyone is welcome to join in this all-day event, by simply wearing your hair in a mad or crazy style to your office, school or place of employment. Later in the day the fun will continue with the Mad Hair Fun Fair at National Sports Centre.

The fair will be held from 4pm until 8pm at the Cricket Pavilion at Bermuda National Sports Centre, as a continuation of Mad Hair Day and a way to contribute if you were unable to participate in the day event. There will be lots of carnival games and activities, including; Bouncy Castles, Laser Tag, Plinko, Lucky 100, Bean Bag Toss, and Pull a Pencil. Plenty of food and drink vendors will be on site, as well as a DJ, a cash bar and raffles.

Entry to the fair is free. The cost to participate in Mad Hair Day is $5 for adults, $2 for children, and proceeds will support cancer patients in Bermuda.

In celebration of World Health Day, Bermuda Hospitals Board will offer Free Hands-Only CPR Training to the public on Friday, September 27th.

The Hands-Only method has been specifically designed to be easy to remember and without mouth-to-mouth contact.

Sessions will take place every half hour, on the hour and at half-past the hour, starting at 8:30am at the Resource Centre on the Ground Floor of the General Wing at KEMH.

The Corporation of St. George’s will honour outstanding persons in tourism at the World Tourism Day on Friday, September 27th.

The event is from 7pm until 10pm at King’s Square, and will recognise the late Philip Anderson, who was a tourism ambassador for St. George, as well as a member of the Corporation of St. George. There will be musical performances by Rickeesha Binns and Live Wires.

This is a free event. Food vendors will be on site.

Bermuda Fun Golf invites you to join their 4th Annual Fun Golf Open Mini Tournament on Saturday, September 28th.

The day begins at 11am with the Individual Stroke Play Tournament, and the top 36 putters from this First Round will advance to the Second Round and “putt it out” for the right to call themselves Best Fun Golfer in Bermuda.

The Best Ball Team Tournament starts at 1pm, when teams of two will each play 18 holes, to see who will be the champion.

At 3pm, the tournament will conclude with prizes and a BBQ.

The cost to enter is $50 per player and includes entry to both the Stroke Play Tournament and Best Ball Tournament, special drink prices during the event, and BBQ. There are only 72 spots available. There is no age limit to enter.

In celebration of World Heart Day, Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is offering free CPR Training for Family & Friends on Saturday and Sunday, September 28th and September 29th.

The Family & Friends technique is taught in a two-hour session. It is not suitable for clinicians.

BHB will offer three sessions, from 8:30pm to 10:30am; 11am to 1pm; or 1:30pm to 3:30pm, at the Resource Centre on the Ground Floor of the General Wing at KEMH.

The sessions are free, however participants will need to purchase the mandatory $5 pack for the course.

Calling all fans of trucks! Meet-A-Mum-Association (MAMA) invites you to bring your little ones and join them at Touch A Truck – a community fundraiser benefiting MAMA charities, the Family Centre and the Bermuda School of Music’s “Every Kid Can” program – on Sunday, September 29th.

From 11am until 3pm at Bernard’s park there will be all sorts of trucks to see, touch and climb into, from construction to utility and emergency vehicles.

A variety of food trucks will also be on site with delicious food for sale.

Entry is $5 per person (free for infants under 12 months).

Come and show your support for Phenomenal People’s D.R.E.A.M. Girls as they launch their first ever short film and book at the Phenomenal People’s Expo on Saturday, October 12th.

The book, Extraordinary Stories from Phenomenal Girls, is a compilation of short stories written by young girls who participate in The Dream Girls Club, a mentoring program for youth between the ages of 9 and 17. They express their view of what makes them a phenomenal young woman and woven throughout the book are words of empowerment from dynamic local and overseas females who have influenced the girls over the past 11 years, and who celebrate their own extraordinary journey of self-discovery and self-love.

The book is $20 and the Dream Girls will be at the launch to personally sign your copy.

The Lost Father will also premier at the expo. It tells the story of a girl whose father suddenly disappears from her life and her journey going forward. This fictional drama short film captures the experience of many people here in Bermuda, and was written, produced, and cast by Bermudians for Bermuda. The ending features an interactive surprise twist.

The local cast will be at the launch to meet and greet, prior to the film. A symposium will immediately follow the film to address the topic of father absence and its impact on youth and families. The goals are to draw awareness to some of the long-term effects and to present opportunities for building resiliency and hope to both impacted adults and youth.

The expo is from noon until 5pm at the BUEI. There is no cover charge for this event.

The Bridge Club invites you to learn a new game, meet new friends and have lots of fun at Beginner Bridge Lessons, an eight-week course starting on Tuesday, October 15th.

Classes will be held every Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm, at the Bridge Club on Pomander Gate (first left after Aberfeldy Nursery).

This course is suitable for absolute beginners. You need not have played cards before.

The cost is $50 for the eight-week course, but the first 2 lessons are free (you don’t pay if you don’t continue). The $50 will be offset against your first year’s Bridge Club membership.

Bermuda Gymnastics Association invites all kids between the ages of 4 and 12 to join their Halloween & Gymnastics Midterm Camp, running from Monday to Friday, October 21st to 25th.

Camp is open daily from 8:30pm until 5:30pm at their premises on Southside Road, St. David’s. The program includes fun Halloween activities, gymnastics, games, playtime, trampoline jumping, and more.

The cost per week is $305 for full days, or $205 for half days.

Looking for a fun way to spend your mid-term break? Mayvera Wellness invites all teenage girls to a High School Girls Retreat focusing on Healing and Achieving on Thursday and Friday, October 24th and 25th.

Retreats are a great way to connect, learn, have fun and relax. On both days, from 9:30am until 2:30pm at 6 Rose Hill in St. George’s, the retreat will focus on: self-esteem building, goal planning and achieving, managing low mood and anxiety, and effective communication.
