Happy Friday Everyone!

I love this time of year when the Friday working day is also a countdown to Happy Hour – let’s hope the sun keeps shining all weekend!

Nothing-to-chew

After the sellout success of the first Nothing to Chew in Bermuda dinner event, I feel like it’s time for the next one? Nothing to Chew 2: Brazilian Feast will be on Saturday, May 19th at the Victoria Grill with three available seatings of 6.30pm, 7pm and 7.30pm.  Don’t eat for a few days beforehand as the menu is amazing! After being served an Argentinean Salad – cucumbers, tomatoes, hearts of palm, and a citrus vinaigrette, you will be served with a selection of Brazilian Churrasco – Grilled Chorizo, Grilled Wahoo, Moho Marinated Chicken, Garlic & Paprika Marinated Sirloin, Grilled Pork Loin and Grilled Atlantic Shrimp. Sides are Rosemary & Parmesan Roasted Potatoes, Gorgonzola Polenta and Sautéed Market Vegetables. Save some room for dessert though as we’ll get homemade Churros tossed in cinnamon sugar.  Tickets are $60 per head (including one glass of wine or beer but excluding additional beverages and gratuities), available from www.premiertickets.bm. As before, a portion of the proceeds of this event will be going to benefit New Beginnings Education Trust – a great new charity which gives young Bermudians access to education and professional development. I would suggest coming in groups of 4 or more – individuals and couples are of course welcome too but just be aware that you may be combined on a table with other individuals and couples for logistical reasons. Spaces are limited for each seating time so snap ’em up quick to avoid disappointment! For special dietary requirements, or any other questions, please email me at ntdiBermuda@hotmail.com – here’s the flyer and here’s the link to the event on Facebook!

Morning Ladies and Gents

Less than one month to go before it's officially summertime in Bermuda and we can go back in the water – yippee!  If you're at a loose end today, then there are a few last-minute events below for your consideration:

  • I know it's short notice but, those of you that love olde worlde-style pomp and circumstance, take note – the Annual Peppercorn Ceremony for this year is today. During this ceremony, the Governor will will receive the Annual Rent of one Peppercorn for the State House from the Master of Lodge St. George and then will hold a meeting of the Governor’s Council, attended by the Premier and Cabinet Ministers. This quaint tradition includes lots of period costumes, military uniforms, a parade and a horse-drawn carriage, all helping transport you back to 1815 when the ceremony first started. As usual, the Governor will arrive at King’s Square at the very precise time of 10.58am.

  • Again, sorry for the short notice but another old favourite is back for the summer season with the return of Harbour Nights tonight!  This will be in the usual time-slot from 7pm until 10pm and will continue up until September 5th. Most of you are very familiar with this but for any newbies or tourists reading this, every Wednesday of the summer months, Front Street is closed to traffic and instead is filled with vendor stalls with various arts and crafts, a food court, late night shopping until 9pm and live music and entertainment.

  • Another new regular event for tonight is Bermuda’s newest happy hour event, The Mingle at O Bar.  This event was created by The Tofumedia Group  with the intention of allowing young professionals to come together, meet new people, and create new connections. This will take place every Wednesday from 5pm until 8pm with the signature drink, The Mingle Martini, drinks specials and complimentary hors d’oeuvres – here's the flyer!

  • Charlar, a social group aiming to bring together Spanish speakers of all levels, presents its first Noche de Cine (Night of Cinema) tomorrow at 6pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall  at Bermuda High School for Girls on Richmond Road.  The chosen film is drama Los Lunes al Sol, starring Javier Bardem, which will have English subtitles , and Karen Jones from Discovery Wines will be offering a white and red Spanish Wine option.  For entry to the film, a $5 donation is suggested and $5 per glass for wine tasting with proceeds going to Bermuda High School for Girls.  For more information, see their website at http://charlarbermuda.wordpress.com or email charlarbda@gmail.com.

  • Also tomorrow, the Youth Library will be hosting Family Story Night from 5.30pm until 7pm.  This event aims to encourage and promote family literacy and quality family time and families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket to the library for an evening of stories, music and magic. The cost is $5 per family and there will also be door prizes. For more information, contact Marla L. Smith, Youth Services Librarian at 295-0487 or mlsmith@gov.bm – here's the flyer!

  • Tomorrow is Haiti Awareness Night at BUEI from 7.30pm with a screening of the documentary, Haiti Village Health, by Bermudian filmaker Robert Zuill.  This will be followed by a presentation of Haiti Village Health Clinic and Programs by Dr. Tiffany Keenan, Founder of Haiti Village Health and a discussion by Wesly Guiteau and Nicola Feldman on Experiences with Haiti Village Health.  This event is free – here's the flyer!

  • Whether you're a student returning home for the summer or you just like to dance like a student, the Annual Welcome Back College Party at Pier 6 promises to kick-off the summer season this Saturday, April 28th.  From 9pm until 2am, there will be special guest appearances, giveaways and music from Imega Sound, DJ Rusty G, YGS Entertainment, Supatone Sound and DJ Smokey. Tickets are $20 (free for ladies with college ID before 10.30pm) and available from Bermuda Bistro at the Beach, Kit & Caboodle or Event DJs - here's the flyer!

  • The 2012 AGM for the Association of Canadians in Bermuda will be on Wednesday, May 2nd in the Argus Building on Wesley Streeet.  The meeting starts at 5.30pm but cocktails will be served from 5pm.  All are welcome, particularly if you are interested in becoming a member – here's the flyer!

  • This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Catlin End-to-End, which will be on Saturday, May 5th.  Full details can be found on www.bermudaendtoend.bm.  To help load you up with carbs in advance of this, La Trattoria will be having an All-You-Can-Eat Pasta Buffet on Wednesday, May 2nd from 5.30pm.  Tickets are $25 and are available at La Trattoria.  For more information, call 295-1877 or e-mail info@trattoria.bm - here's the flyer!

  • Mother's Day is coming soon and, to help you find that special gift, Wanderlust Boutique and Rene Hill Originals brings you Night Market, a unique shopping event at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on Friday, May 4th. From 5pm until 9pm, there will be a cash bar with Happy Hour drinks prices, as you peruse Thai jewelry, t-shirts and decorative gift items from Wanderlust Boutique, traditional Bermuda Cedar handbags, summers scarves, clothing and beach glass crochet jewelry from Rene Hill Originals  and ElleTee original pieces.  Cash and credit cards will be accepted - here's the flyer!

Happy Friday the 13th Kids!

Ha, didn't expect to hear from me again this week, did you?  Just a quickie before the weekend:

  • The rather unimaginatively-named The Spa at Tucker's Point is no more as Rosewood Tucker's Point have unveiled their newly rebranded Sense Spa.  Sense Spas focus on being unique to their location by incorporating indigenous natural elements, which means you can expect such treats as Bermuda honey, cedar oil and even a Swizzle scrub incorporated into treatments.  To celebrate the new spa, they will be hosting an Open House tomorrow, Saturday, April 14th from 6pm until 8pm, with experts from some of their product lines, including Priori Skincare, Germaine de Capuccini and Tata Harper on-hand to answer questions while Jane Hendler, founder of Ajne, will be creating personalised scents to complement your body's chemistry.  This is in addition to the Sense spa signature beverage, spatinis, tapas, product and treatment demonstrations and giveaways. Even if you can't make tomorrow night, locals are welcome to visit for a spa tour at any time from the 13th until the 15th, with a 20% discount on all bookings during this time.  There will also be a 15% discount on any treatments booked between the 16th and 30th of April and they promise to promote special pricing throughout the year to Bermuda residents too.  Here's a handy hint from me – if you're booking a treatment, try and get one with their amazing Silver TAG 18-head shower included – it would empty your tank in about 3 minutes so isn't really something you could recreate at home!  Here's the flyer and here's the new spa menu !

  • Whether you're looking for a bargain or have stuff to sell, you'll be delighted to know that the MAMA Car Boot Sale will be at Mount St. Agnes on Saturday, May 5th from 9am until 12 noon. Stalls will be selling toys, books, baby stuff and tea/coffee/baked goods with a bouncy castle to keep the little ones amused while you shop. Entry is free, or you can reserve a table for $30 by emailing mamasocial@mama.bm - here's the flyer

  • Victoria Grill and Rumba°R Lounge are offering a few promotions for the Spring Season. Firstly is The Wine Buffet. If you order an entrée over $25 between Monday and Wednesday, you have the option of choosing as much as you can drink from a constantly changing selection of wine for $29.95.  Another wine option is offered Monday to Thursday where you can Bring Your Own Wine (BYOW) for $25 corkage. Sad that lobster season is over?  Fear not, their third promotion is Lobster Fest, offering a range of Atlantic Lobster focused dishes ranging from $6.95 for lobster bisque to $29.95 for a half-lobster dinner. Options change on a daily basis, Monday to Friday. Since they are now closed on Sundays, their All-You-Can-Eat Churrasco is now on Saturdays, at a cost of $39.95 per person or $2 per year of their for every child under 13.  All of these are in addition to their Happy Hour on Fridays with $5.22 drinks ($6 when grats are included), and then dance the night away with SalsaMania Fridays in the courtyard from 9pm until 1am.  The weather doesn't even have to be a factor any more since they have a retractable roof and patio heaters – here's the flyer!

Morning Kids!

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter – I know I certainly did!  I may have indulged a little too much as I am starting to become the shape of an Easter egg.  Anyway, here are the latest Bermuda events:

  • Due to popular demand, The Tartan Panda Extravaganza, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda's Scottish-Chinese menu at Chopsticks has been extended until the end of April – full details and menus can be found here

  • Chewstick's T.W.I.G.S. Youth Open-Mic is back this coming Saturday, April 14th at The Chewstick Neo-griot Lounge. T.W.I.G.S. (True Wisdom in Growing Souls) aims to empower Bermuda's youngest artists (under-18s) to take ownership of their talents, and gives them a positive social outlet that can help them to grow and connect with each other.  This will be from 6pm until 9pm and creative young people who can rap, sing, dance, play an instrument or write poetry, and are interested in performing, are encouraged to get there early to sign-up. Entry is $5 (additional donations toward the Chewstick Foundation are appreciated) and soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Adults are encouraged to attend – but ONLY if accompanied by a young person in their lives. This will be on the second Saturday of every month so future dates are May 12th and June 9th. For further information contact 292-2439 or info@chewstick.org – here's the flyer!

SCUBA Divers will be in the water and anyone interested in joining the dive effort is asked to contact them in advance. If the weather is bad at noon that day, then the event will be cancelled but you can confirm by calling 599-5080 or following them on Twitter @bdaoceanexplore for live updates – here's the flyer!
