Morning Boys and Girls!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! Mine had its ups and downs. There’s nothing like a really good downpour to let you know that you have a leak in your roof. On the plus side, a temporary indoor swimming pool is kinda fun.. Anyway, here are the latest BDA events:

They outnumber humans a million to one, there are 10,000 types known, and their total weight equals that of the human race.  Not my favourite creatures (anything that tries to steal my chocolate gets put on my List of Enemies immediately) but you can’t deny that they are fascinating – Ants: Little Creatures Who Run The World is the next film showing in Bermuda National Library’s Get REEL Wednesday Documentary Film Series.  This will be screened tonight at 5.15pm in the meeting room – here’s the flyer!

Charlar, the Spanish Club, presents their second Noche de Cine (Night of Cinema) tomorrow at 6pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at Bermuda High School for Girls on Richmond Road. The chosen film is the Spanish-French drama Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother), which is rated R and will have English subtitles.  For entry to the film, a $5 donation is suggested, with proceeds going to Bermuda High School for Girls. For more information, see their website at charlarbermuda.wordpress.com or email charlarbda@gmail.com.

To mark the visit of Gonzalo from Chakana Wines, Discovery Wines we will be throwing an Asado, or Argentine BBQ, in his honour on Thursday, June 28th.  This will be at 7pm at Mad Hatters with four courses of Argentine food and wines from Chakana.  The cost is $100 per person and you can reserve your spot by calling Mad Hatters at 297-6231.

The next Wine Class from Discovery Wines  will be on Saturday, June 30th at Harry’s from 10am until noon with a focus on the varietals and the geography of Washington State and Oregon. The cost is $35 per person and includes wines for tasting and handouts.

You are invited to bring the whole family to enjoy all the fun of the fair as Mount Saint Agnes Academy (MSA) Bazaar presents Nursery Rhymes on Friday, October 19th and Saturday, October 20th. From 10am until 10pm, you can enjoy various games, the Super Slide, bingo, baked goods, plants and refreshments. Raffle tickets are available from any student or at the School for $10, with prizes including a Kia Rio Car, Nickelodeon Cruise, Kymco People S 125 and Movie 150cc Motorcycles. Admission is $4 or free for children under 5 – here’s the flyer!

  • The Bermuda Rugby Football Union (BRFU) Annual Dinner for 2012 will be at 7pm on Saturday, June 30th at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.  The dinner is in support of the current youth, kids and schools initiatives started by the BRFU in the past year or so and there will also be an auction of rugby memorabilia to raise further funds. Guest speakers are Lewis Moody MBE (World Cup Winner and former England Captain) and Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi. There are three different options and two different events on offer. First of all is the Captain’s Choice Tournament, where you can choose an 8am or 1pm shotgun start. The afternoon event is restricted to teams of three registered entrants as one MIRRORS young person will be included per team after participating in a morning golf clinic. If you were a previous attendee of NTDIB Neon, you’ll know how much fun night golf is. At 9pm (shotgun start) there will be a Night Golf Tournament run on two 9-hole circuits. The entry fees are $100 per player for the Captain’s Choice morning afternoon events (includes green fee and cart) or $75 per player for Night Golf (walking only, golf carts don’t have headlights, and special glow-in-the-dark golf balls will be provided).  If you want to do more than one event, great news, there are deal bundles! Morning Troops!

I completely forgot about the holiday next Monday so am feeling very chuffed about having a four day week coming up so soon!  Happy are the forgetful…anyway, here’s what’s going on in Bermuda:

  • A night of Calypso, Soca, R&B, film, comedy and magic, featuring The Bermuda Magic Band, Mr. Magic, Markita and fiery limbo dancers with special guest artist, Gene Steede – that’s what’s on offer at Bermuda Magic: The Renaissance in the Harbourview Ballroom of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.   Actually, many nights, since this show is running Sundays to Thursdays (with a few exclusions and including a few Fridays and Saturdays – dates on the flyer) until November 1st.  Showtime is at 8.30pm and tickets are available from  www.ptix.bm at a cost of $50.  For more details, contact 704-4290 or bermudamagic@gmail.com – here’s the flyer!  **UPDATE: This show has been cancelled**

  • John Cox, author of Bermuda Hauntings and Bermuda’s Favourite Haunts will be at Bermuda National Library (upper floor) on Thursday, June 14th for a special Bermuda Hauntings event. From 7.30pm to 8.30pm, you can hear ghost stories and have your books signed by the author (they’ll also be available for purchase on the night). Admission is free but space is limited so registration is required. To RSVP, contact 295-2905 or ejhollis@gov.bm – here’s the flyer!

  • If you have neon clothing lurking in your closet, now is a good chance to dig it out as Docksiders will be raving again on Saturday, June 16th from 10pm until 3am.  This high energy dance party will feature new lasers and lights, DJs Smokey, OB1 and Supa J, Goslings drink specials, (featuring  Corona, Ketel One, Black Seal, Patron XO) plus glowstick and finger light giveaways! Tickets are $15 in advance from Dockies or Sovereign Jewellers or $20 on the door – here’s the flyer!

  • A Gospel Benefit Concert will be held at the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Saturday, June 16th, with proceeds going towards assisting a family with on-going medical costs resulting from a loved one who is dealing with a rare form of cancer.  Doors open at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7pm with featured entertainers including Geneman, Tiffany Fox, Pastor Johnny Woolridge, Vernon Temple Youth Choir, Shoa Bean, Mitchell “Wire” Trott, Crystal Lowe, Allen Temple Dancers, Asha Rattery, Pastor Stovell, Faith Deliverance Centre Dancers and Spiritual Peace.  Tickets are $20 ($50 for Patron Tickets) and are available from from Kit-n-Caboodle, by calling LeKea Dill (278-5936 or 704-0211) or at the door – here’s the flyer!
