Morning Kids!

Hope you all had a wonderful Bermuda Day last week – how many of you braved the water?  The water that fell from the sky was enough for me – hopefully we’re going to have a little run of good weather so that I can work on turning my usual lovely shade of lobster-red..    Here are some more Bermuda events to look forward to:

  • Ferrari Bar at LV’s are hosting a Charity Happy Hour in support of Tomorrow’s Voices this coming Friday, June 1st. From 4.30pm until 9pm, you can enjoy drinks at Happy Hour Prices, complimentary nibbles and a roast beef carving station. There will also be a raffle draw with tickets for purchase at a cost of $3 for one or $4 for ten – here’s the flyer!

  • Forget The Avengers, the alliance of the summer is the combined might of The Youth Library, Bermuda National Gallery, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, Bermuda National Trust and The Bermuda Botanical Society who have joined forces to offer Whistle Stop Adventure on Saturday, June 2nd.  Kids aged between 7 and 10 are invited to climb aboard the Bermuda Train to explore Bermuda History. The fun starts at 9am at the Youth Library and the children will have a tour, participate in an activity and learn about their surroundings at each venue before ending at the Botanical Gardens at 3.30pm. Lunch is included and the cost is $15.  For more information, contact 295-0487 – here’s the flyer!

  • The One Bermuda Alliance is hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 2nd at Mullet Bay Park, St. George’s.  From 11am until 6pm, you can enjoy a variety of entertainment, including Fun Castles, a dunking stool (you’ll get the opportunity to vote which MP Candidate or Senator will get dunked), local artists, a tug of war competition, a sack bag race and a three-legged race.  Admission is free, food costs $2 and drinks and games cost $1, with proceeds to benefit the St. George’s Foundation and the Beyond Sports Bermuda Rugby charities.  For more information, contact info@oba.bm or 294-3264 – here’s the flyer!

  • The Adult Services Film Selection at Bermuda National Library this week is Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy with showtimes at 11am and 2pm on Saturday, June 2nd. All are welcome but they suggest you get there early since spaces are limited – here’s the flyer!

  • Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s Education Officer, Rhonda Smith-Simmons, will be hosting Male Cancer Checked Out, a free health presentation on Thursday, June 7th.  This will be at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre at 46 Point Finger Road, Paget from 5.45pm.  As the name suggests, the talk will be focusing on male cancers (for men and women), the risks, the recommended screenings, how to recognise early signs and symptoms, and what to do if you have concerns.   For more information, or to register, contact info@chc.bm or 236-0949 – here’s the flyer!

  • To encourage a healthy start to the retirement of their President, Gerald Simons, The Argus Group invites you on a Bermuda National Trust Guided Nature Walk  on Saturday, June 9th.  The 45 minute tour starts at the Berry Hill entrance of the Botanical Gardens and is open to everyone.  Refreshments will be provided after the walk – here’s the flyer (it says that the deadline to register was Monday but you can still join)!

  • It’s that time of year again when Flanagans Onions F.C. (the team formerly known as M.R. Onions F.C.) bring us some swigging and sailing shenanigans.  Their Euro 2012 Booze Cruise will be on Saturday, June 9th and, to get everyone in the mood for the European Championships, they invite you to come dressed in your favourite football (soccer) jersey.  The boat departs Albuoys Point at 7.30pm, returning at 10.30pm and includes a live DJ and open bar.  Tickets are $50 and available from cosgravealan@gmail.com – here’s the flyer!

  • Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre will be having their annual Purple Tag Days event on Friday, June 15th and Saturday, June 16th and they invite you to spread the word by wearing purple.  The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre while raising awareness that many cancers are preventable, early detection saves lives and that support for survivors, family and friends is available.   For more information on how to take part, visit www.chc.bm – here’s the flyer!

  • Whether you’re of Caribbean descent, or just enjoy the food and music from that part of the world, you won’t want to miss the West Indian Association (Bermuda)’s Dine & Dance Around D Caribbean party on Saturday, June 23rd at the Bermuda College Cafetorium.  This event will include a cash bar, tasters from 7pm until 9.30pm, followed by dancing to music from DJ LaMontagne until 1am.  Tickets are $25 and are available from all members of the WIA Executive Committee or from westindianber@yahoo.com – here’s the flyer!

  • The Somerset Branch of the Bermuda Police Service are looking for your sponsorship as they attempt the impressive feat of Rowing One Million Metres for Charity at Sandys 360 from Thursday, July 12th.  Organiser Sergeant Derek Berry and 11 other members of the Somerset Police, will be broken into groups of four members. The groups will alternate rowing every eight hours, with each member rowing for a half hour, and will row continuously until they reach their goal.  One million metres is almost 65 miles and they expect to have completed this by the afternoon of Sunday, July 15th – taking around 3 and a half days.  Spectators and supporters are welcome during normal opening hours and there may also be festivities on the launch day – more details to follow!  If you’d like to sponsor, the participating officers have pledge sheets, as well as a general pledge sheet at Sandys 360 Front Desk and at the Somerset Police Station.

Morning Kids!

First of all, thanks to everyone who attended Nothing to Chew 2 at Victoria Grill on Saturday night – the photos are now on the Facebook Page here so feel free to tag yourselves!  I’m sure you haven’t forgotten that tomorrow is Bermuda Day, so I hope you all have a wonderful holiday.  If you happen to be working, make sure you give yourself some sort of treat, like an extra cookie or something, so that it’s still a special day.  Now, down to some Bermuda events:

  • Looking for a way to kick off the May 24th celebrations?  SalsaMania Productions are hosting Gombey Salsa: Pre-Heritage Day Party tonight at Sabor Dance School (at Old Berkeley School) from 9.30pm.  There is no cover charge and it is open to all – BYOB if you want to drink.  For more information, contact info@bermudasalsa.com.

  • Life Aquatic, a new art exhibit from Milton Hill and Ami Zanders will be coming soon to Studio A at Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) in City Hall. The official opening will be Friday, May 25th from 5.30pm until 7.30pm but, if you miss that, the show will run until Tuesday, June 12th – here’s the flyer!

  • Great news for anyone who misses the Moonlight Movie Series – the Evangelical Church of Bermuda has announced the launch of Community Family Movie Nights!    These free, family-friendly movies will be shown on a 13-foot inflatable screen on the church’s field and the first will be a screening of Grace Card on Friday, May 25th.  Future films include Fire Proof on Friday, June 22nd, Joseph on Friday, July 27th and Courageous on Friday, August 24th.  The movies begin at 8.45pm and you are invited to bring your own blanket or chair and enjoy the free refreshments served and the free fun castle available for the kids before the film starts. For more information, visit www.evangelicalchurchbermuda.com – here’s the flyer!

  • One of the best ways to enjoy a Bermuda sunset is from the water – which is why Ana Luna are hosting a Wine Tasting & Sunset Cruise on Saturday, May 26th. The boat will leave the dock at Grotto Bay at 5.45pm and will offer five different wines from Discovery Wines with light snacks.  Tickets are $80 per person ($75 if paying cash) and can be reserved from ana-luna-adventures@hotmail.com – here’s the flyer!

  • In the first in a series of theme balls this summer, Pickled Onion presents their Fire Ball party on Saturday, May 26th.  The fun will run from 10pm until 3am and promises special decor, live music from their new in-house band Grafitti Park, drinks specials and more, with a suggested dress code of fiery colours (red, orange and yellow) – here’s the flyer!

  • The next edition of the BIFFlix Monthly Film Series will be a screening of the film The Kid With A Bike on Sunday, May 27th at the usual venue of BUEI at 6.30pm. For more details, or to buy tickets, please see http://tickets.biff.bm/Event/143/The-Kid-with-a-Bike/.

  • Fancy being transported to another island without leaving Bermuda?  Chef Mike Knight and Ten Cafe & Bar are hosting a Hawaiian Food & Wine Pairing Evening on Thursday, May 31st at 7pm.  The evening will start with a complimentary Hawaiian Punch, followed by a 5-course dinner accompanied by specially selected wines.  The cost is $75 per head, reservations are highly recommended and can be made by contacting ten@yellowfin.bm or 295-0857 –  here’s the flyer with the menu included!

  • L’Alliance Française des Bermudes will be hosting a Pétanque Tournament on Friday, June 1st at the pétanque lane of Bermuda College from 5.30pm.  This is the French form of boules, traditionally played with metallic balls on a dirt surface and the event is open to players (whether experienced or novice) and spectators alike.  You are invited to bring your favourite wine, snacks and blanket or beach chair, as well as your pétanque balls, if you have them.  L’Alliance Française will provide baguettes, cheese and snacks for the children, as well as the chance to win a basket full of French specialties by guessing its weight. The minimum playing fee is $10 and additional donations will also be welcome!

  • Mélange are saving you the airfare to Vegas as they present their Old Hollywood Glam Casino Night at the Bermuda Society of Arts on Saturday, June 2nd from 7pm until 11pm. The MC for the evening is Captain Kievel Burgess and you can expect a complimentary signature cocktail, hors d’oeuvres, $25 in chips and a live auction.   As the name suggests, the theme is Hollywood Glam so get dressed to impress and ready to gamble for a good cause since funds raised will go towards helping breast cancer patients who need help paying for medication – more information can be found at www.melange.bm. Tickets are $100 and available from www.otfbermuda.com  – here’s the flyer!

  • Some of you have been asking about this, so here is some information on Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee official celebrations in Bermuda.  On Saturday, June 2nd, a Flotilla of Local Vessels will depart Hamilton Harbour at noon and sail to Dockyard.  An open invitation is extended to local mariners and the JL Cecil Smith (the ferry on which Her Majesty travelled in 2009) will lead the event. That same day, there will be a Street Festival sponsored by WedCo in Dockyard with entertainment, food, and fun for all, and Evening Lighting of Beacons at various Island locations, mirroring beacons across the Commonwealth. On Sunday, June 3rd, the Anglican Bishop of Bermuda will lead an inter-faith and inter-denominational National Worship Service at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.  The service will feature the debut performance of the Jubilee Fanfare, commissioned of Major D. B. Robinson EM, Director of Music, Bermuda Regiment.  As mentioned in a previous post, the June 3rd edition of Summer Sunday in the Park will have a Queen’s Jubilee theme. Monday, June 4th has been designated Charity Day and public and private sectors are encouraged to participate in a charity project in support of local causes. Due to its vital contribution to building character and engendering community spirit in young people,  Outward Bound is the proposed Jubilee Charity. That same day will see the initial planting of the Jubilee Bermuda Cedar in an area to be designated the Jubilee Grove located at Coney Island in Hamilton Parish.  This will both complement the reforestation project there and mirror a UK project with similar aims. The Grove will be opened and the tree planted by The Premier and H.E. The Governor. To round off the official celebrations, two Jubilee Scholars, based on academic prowess and all-round qualities, will be designated and announced with a variety of awards to recognize their achievement.  If you have Union Jack bunting left over from Will & Kate’s wedding last year, this would be a good excuse to dig it out – here’s the flyer!

  • Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society presents Shaken not Stirred, the latest performance from the Daylesford Singers from Thursday, June 7th until Saturday, June 9th.  This year’s concert will have a Bond theme with performances at 8pm nightly.  Tickets are $25 and available from the box office or online at www.bmds.bm from June 4th – here’s the flyer!

  • Good news for Sunday shoppers – Gibbons Company, including The Home Store, Nine West, Twenty5Reid and M.A.C Cosmetics, are now open on Sundays from 1pm until 5pm!

Happy Wednesday Troops!

First up, a big apology to all my email subscribers – a little glitch meant that last Wednesday’s email didn’t hit your inbox until Saturday!  I would explain what happened but it is very boring and you probably don’t really care anyway – the main thing is that everything is fixed now!

The glitch also affected the link to tickets sales for Nothing to Chew 2 – thanks to those of you who contacted me to let me know.  Again, all systems are go now so you can purchase tickets at www.premiertickets.bm.  Tickets are $60 and are on sale until Thursday, May 17th or until they sell out, whichever happens first.  Get them now before you forget because it’s going to be awesome!  Anyway, down to more Bermuda events:

  • Jiketsu Martial Arts, Fitness & Natural Healing Centre at the Old Berkeley Institute are offering a course on Self-Defense Training System (SDTS): Essential Defensive Tactics for Women.  This focuses on quick and easy techniques which work in real life situations, rather than requiring that your attacker gives you time to get into a fighting stance before they come at you at a certain angle. This is on Thursdays from 5.30pm until 7pm beginning May 10th for three weeks and costs $175.  In addition, they are offering a course on Core Conditioning, Body Sculpting and De-Stressing Techniques.  Classes are on Mondays and Thursdays from 12 noon until 1pm, at a cost of $200 per month, or on Thursday only from 7pm until 8pm at a cost of $100 per month. For more details, contact jiketsuadmin@northrock.bm or 705-7541 – here’s the flyer!

  • There’s a Happy Hour option for a good cause this Friday – Ferrari Bar at LV’s are hosting a Charity Happy Hour in support of the Masterworks Museum during their 25th anniversary year. There will also be a raffle draw with tickets for purchase at a cost of $3 for one or $4 for ten – here’s the flyer!

  • The Renegades RFC Annual Dinner is on Saturday, May 12th at the Dinghy Club and is open to non-club members this year due to their special guest.  Former Wales Captain Gwyn Jones is their key note speaker so it has been opened up in case anyone of Welsh heritage and/or rugby enthusiasts are interested in attending. If that isn’t enough of an incentive, the evening will include a cocktail hour and a four-course dinner.  Tickets are $100 and available from social@renegades.bm – here’s the flyer!

  • Another Mother’s Day event, this time for the Party Mums!  De Party Bus, a fundraiser for Somerset Trojans Youth Soccer Tour 2012, will be visiting bars between St. George’s and Somerset on Sunday, May 13th.  De Party Bus will be leaving Somerset Cricket Club at 12 noon sharp and traveling to St. Georges Cricket Club, Gombey’s Restaurant & Bar, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club, Devonshire Recreation Club, Southampton Rangers Club and the Prison Officers Club, stopping for drinks in each before finishing back at Somerset Cricket Club, where there will be free food, a cash bar and dancing available.  Tickets are $50 and available from www.bermudaboxoffice.com/Event/5/Mothers-Day-Party-Bus/ – here’s the flyer!

  • Two slightly more sedate options can be found at The St. George’s Club.  The Beach House at Blackbeard’s Hideout is hosting a Mother’s Day Brunch from 11.30am at a cost of $25 plus grats.  The price includes a mimosa, bloody Mary or orange juice and tea or coffee.  For reservations, call 297-1400 or book online at www.table.bmhere’s the flyer with the menu included!  Griffin’s Bistro are also offering a Mother’s Day Brunch, with the first seating at 12 noon and the last at 3.30pm.  The cost is $47 per person, plus grats, or $25 for under-10s.  For reservations, call 297-4235 or book online at www.table.bm – here’s the flyer with the menu included!

May 2nd, 2012

Hi Kids!

If you can believe it, we are now over a third of the way through 2012!  Hmmm…I don't even remember what my New Year's Resolution was so I'm not really sure whether or not I kept it..  Anyway, not to worry, back to Bermuda events:

  • A good excuse for an excursion to the West End, the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard presents The Spring show and Nahed Eid, both running until the end of May. The Spring Show is a Member's Juried Show with all media and all sizes. Admission is free and they are open daily from 10am until 5pm - here's the flyer

  • Are you a professional counsellor or in the helping profession?  The Bermuda Counselling Association is a not for profit organisation which aims to offer affordable continuing education to helping professionals in Bermuda.  If this applies to you, their next seminar is this coming Saturday, May 5th from 9am until 1pm at BUEI.  Overview of Interventions for Trauma Experienced in Childhood will be in the format of web-based video conference live from Boston and participants will be able to ask questions directly to the speaker, Ilya Yacevich, LMFT.  The cost is $80 and you can register by contacting bdaCounsellors@live.com – here's the flyer page 1 and page 2!

  • A little more imaginative than the usual flowers and chocolates combo, Secrets presents Chocolate Tease, a pre-Mother's day lingerie fashion show for the ladies this Saturday, May 5th in the Mid-Ocean Ampitheatre at the Fairmont Southampton. Doors open at 8.30pm and tickets are $40 from Secrets, Transformations, Clara Bows or Kit n Caboodle – here's the flyer!

  • Speaking of Mother's Day, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess will be hosting their Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 13th in the Harbourview Ballroom.  This will be at a cost of $60 $55 plus grats, and includes a glass of champagne – to reserve, call 298-5779.

  • Since the end of last year, the island's under 17s have been showing off their singing, dancing, instrumental, comedy, poetry and other skills to audition for the First Annual Bermuda's Youth Got Talent (BYGT) and the top 20 performers will showcase their talent during a ZBM broadcast from 8pm on Monday, May 21st. Recording of these live performances will be on Wednesday, May 9th at the Ruth Seaton James Center for the Performing Arts.  This ticketed event will be from 6pm until 8pm and tickets are $20 or $50 for VIP Patrons, and are available from  www.ptix.bm.  All proceeds go to the Coalition for the Protection of Children - here's the flyer!

  • Getting great bargains is all well and good, but how often do you really consider the true cost of what you purchase? This year World Fair Trade Day on Saturday, May 12th is being celebrated across the globe with a fair trade breakfast.  In what is believed to be the first authentic fair trade event in Bermuda, CV Cafe will be partnering with the Sweet Saak bakery who will offer a special Fair Trade breakfast menu as well as samples of fair trade muesli. Breakfast options will include eggs, sausages and banana pancakes made with Fair Trade ingredients as well as toast with a variety of fair trade toppings including honey, jam, marmalade and chocolate spread. Breakfast will run from 8.30am until supplies run out - here's the flyer!

  • The Bermuda Open Championship for 2012 will be from Thursday, June 14th to Sunday, June 17th at Port Royal Golf Course. There is a professional division, men’s and ladies amateur divisions and a senior men’s and ladies division, with each division crowning a champion. The closing date is June 1st and you can obtain an application form by contacting the Bermuda Golf Association office at 295-9972 or bdagolf@logic.bm – here's the flyer!

  • The Fairmont Hamilton Princess have released their weekly offerings for Summer 2012! Firstly, they invite you to chase away those Monday Blues with Martini Monday Madness at Heritage Court, where you can either create your own speciality martini or have the team of Fairmont mixologists create one for you. Next, the Flagpole Terrace, with its beautiful views of Hamilton Harbour, is the setting for the Tuesday Island BBQ with delicious hot-from-the-grill fresh Bermudian favourites from 6pm to 9.30pm. Get over Hump Day with the Wednesday Wine Flight in the hotel lobby from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.  Each week will feature fine wines from a different region in the world. Thursday Oyster & Chablis Night will be served tableside at Heritage Court from 5pm. Friday is, of course, Happy Hour from 5pm until 9pm, rain or shine.  Saturday Jazz Under The Stars is open-air entertainment by a jazz trio from 6.30pm until 9.30pm for diners at Harley’s Terrace.  Cognac and Cigars are also available every night after dinner outside Heritage Court. Finally, Sunday Brunch at Harley’s Restaurant & Harbour Terrace will continue throughout the summer from 12 noon until 3.30pm –  here's the flyer!
