Morning Troops!
It’s amazing how quickly the Bermuda Calendar fills up, even at this supposedly quiet time of year. Here’s what coming up over the next few months:
Bermuda National Gallery is currently closed but will be reopening to the public on Friday, January 18th with four new exhibitions. Eyes on the World, in partnership with the Alexia Foundation, is a photojournalistic exhibition focused on social issues. Women Artists in the Bermuda National Gallery Collection will be in the Watlington Room, reflecting diverse expressions and medium from landscape paintings to contemporary sculpture. Impressions of Bermuda: The David L. White Gift to the Bermuda National Gallery will be in the Ondaatje Wing, featuring works by visiting American Impressionist painters in the early 20th century. Meredith Andrews: Portraits of Power will be featured in the lower mezzanine. The BNG Member’s exhibition opening is the evening before on Thursday, January 17th from 5.30pm until 7pm, with opening remarks at 6pm. To RSVP, contact Admin@bng.bm or 295-9428.
Pembroke Community Club on North Shore will be the venue for a special music extravaganza from 4pm on Sunday, January 20th as they host the Deep Bay Music Festival. Featured performers will include the Giant Steps Band, Ricky Spence, LaVette Fuentes, Darlene Hartley, Glen Iris, The Club 2000 International Fever Dancers, Cool Jade Minors and Toni Robinson. The event will also include raffles and a light supper as well as decrees from the Honourary Queen Joan Dismont and Honourary King Stanley Morton with awards given to Edwin “Doc” Simons and Eleanor “Molly” Brown for service to the music community. The January edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, January 20th with the documentary The House I Live In, showing at 3pm, followed by A Royal Affair at 5.15pm. Always a popular event on the Bermuda Calendar, Teachers Football Rugby Club (TRFC) presents Fight Night XV: All or Nothing, The Rematch on Saturday, February 2nd at Berkeley Institute Gym from 6pm. In addition to the usual amateur boxing bouts, fightgoers can also enjoy a WBC World Super Middleweight Boxing Championship Bout with Bermuda’s own Teresa Perozzi in a rematch against American Tori Nelson. Tickets are $65 for general admission, $130 for VIPs (includes open bar) and they are available from International Sports Shop, TRFC players or online at pTix.bm.
Now in its 3rd year, Sandys 360 are once again hosting their Annual Wet N Wild Swim-a-thon. This fundraiser will be held on Friday, February 8th from 10am until midnight and schools, families, service members and other groups in the community are all invited to participate. Baking with kids can be a lot of fun…but a lot of mess too! Luckily, Mother’s Treats Gourmet Cupcakes have come to the rescue by letting your little monsters make a mess in their kitchen instead at their upcoming Little Cupcake’s Baking and Decorating Class. The classes are suitable for kids aged between 6 and 12, running from 11am to 1pm on Saturdays, February 9th, 16th and 23rd and Saturdays, March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Each class includes 2 hours of making, baking, decorating and learning everything Cupcakes and each child gets 4 luxury cupcakes, personally decorated, to take home. If your New Year’s Resolution is to get a little more balance in your life, noted Yoga Instructor, Todd Norian, will be teaching a yoga workshop, Yoga for the Five Elements, at the Fairmont Southampton from Friday, March 1st until Sunday, March 3rd. The Open Sky workshop, a potpourri of heart-opening poses and more, will be on the Friday from 6.30pm until 9pm. Rich Earth will be on the Saturday from 9.30am until 12.30pm and will include standing poses, backbends, and more. Also on Saturday from 2.30pm until 5.30pm will be Delicious Water, offering therapeutics for the hips, pelvis and lower back. The final workshop will combine the remaining two elements, Bright Fire and Soothing Wind on Sunday from 9.30am until 12.30pm and will include fun hand balances, deeper backbends, and more. Each individual workshop is $70 or you can attend all four for $280. If you register and pay by February 8th, you can avail of the Early Bird price of $240. The National Museum of Bermuda is giving all Bermuda residents a special New Year’s gift. For the months of January and February, entry to the Museum is free with proof of residency (show a driver’s licence or utility bill). As the Museum is home to Dolphin Quest, visitor are able to view the dolphins for free too. The Museum is open 7 days a week, from 10am until 4pm (last admission 3pm) and children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, visit www.bmm.bm.
The only thing better than a good meal is a good meal for a great price. Island Restaurant Group are offering just that with their Winterlicious menu at each of their restaurants. Pickled Onion, Hog Penny and Victoria Grill are offering a 3-course dinner for $30, while Barracuda Grill’s offering is $40. This menu will run until March 14th and is available Sundays to Thursdays. Local salsa legend, Teresa Whitter, is now offering mobile Adult Latin Dance lessons. Teresa will be offering individuals and couples tuition in Salsa (On1 and On2), Cha Cha, Bachata, Hustle, Lead/follow technique, Styling, Choreography and Dance-Magic Performance Packages for special events (Weddings, parties, etc.) and Dance-based team/relationship-building workshops. The cost per student, per hour is $60 for one student, $40 for two students and $25 for three or more, with further discounts for a package of five or more lessons paid in advance. Good news for Tai Chi and Qigong fans as instructor, Sifu Larry Trott, at Sankofa will be hosting weekly classes from today. Tai Chi classes will be on Mondays from 5.30pm until 7.30pm while Qigong classes on Wednesdays from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Each class costs $100 per month and all are welcome. A new addition to the Regular/Recurring Events section, Sweet P are offering Afternoon High Tea at The Bermuda Perfumery every Wednesday and Saturday. Their tiered tea tray offers fresh and seasonal treats, adapted every week to reflect the Island’s diverse local ingredients. You can expect a variety of finger sandwiches, mini quiches and tea sweets, as well as freshly baked cakes and scones with Chantilly cream and local honey and jam. Their winter hours are 1pm to 4pm until March 31st and then 2pm until 5pm from April 1st until October 31st. The cost is $28 per person, cash. Local fishermen are starting to report whale sightings – which means that it won’t be long until whale-watching season is officially upon us! Blue Water Divers and Watersports are now taking bookings for their 2013 expeditions, which are expected to get into full swing between February and April. All trips are weather dependent and depart from Robinson’s Marina at Somerset Bridge, lasting between 3 and 5 hours.
