Morning Kids!
Happy 12.12.12, the last repeating date of the century! Do you think that this calls for us all to do something memorable today? Here’s what’s happening in Bermuda this month:
The work of many talented young people is currently on display at the Bermuda National Gallery (BNG) as almost 600 student artwork submissions were received for the for the 2012 BNG Student Art Competition. The theme was Identity and the Awards Ceremony will be tomorrow, Thursday, December 13th at 4pm. Good news, my preciousses, the Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF) are hosting an End of Term The Hobbit Screening Party at Speciality Cinema this Friday, November 14th. The festivities will start at 1.30pm, with the screening starting at 2.30pm. Tickets are $25 for kids, $40 for adults and includes a goodie bag for each attendee, special guests from Middle Earth and prizes for best costumes. Tickets are available from www.specialitycinema.bm and more details are available from www.biff.bm.
Can’t get out of work to get to the 2.30pm screening? Never fear, BIFF are also hosting two evening The Hobbit Premiere Screening Parties at 5.30pm for the 6.30pm screening and at 8.30pm for the 10pm screening. As with the kids’ screening, there will be special guests from Middle Earth and a prize for the best costume. Additionally, the evening screenings will include one raffle tickets, Hobbit ale/wizard elixir (beer/wine) and nibbles. Additional raffle tickets will be available for sale at a cost of $5 each. Looking for a childcare option for late night shopping on Friday, December 14th? Adopt-a-Family Bermuda are hosting a Children’s Christmas Party from 6pm until 11pm at the First Church of God on North Shore. This is suitable for kids aged 5 to 11 and will include games, prizes and more, with food and drink for sale. The cost is $10 and you are asked to also bring a non-perishable food item for their Christmas hampers for the needy. For more details, see www.wuzup.bm.
Good news for turkeyphiles (this is probably not a real word but I’m going with it anyway), there is no need to wait until Christmas day to have turkey with all all the trimmings. The Waterlot Inn is offering a 3-course Holiday Table D’Hote Menu from Sunday, December 22nd until Monday, December 24th from 5pm until 10pm. The cost is $56 which includes gratuities. Can’t get enough of that roast turkey? Newport Gastropub are filling the gap between Christmas and New Year with their Festive Dining menu. This will run from Boxing Day until Sunday, December 30th from 5pm until 10pm and costs $56 including grats. For reservations, contact 238-8000.
Masterworks Museum in the Botanical Gardens are once again hosting their Arts for All workshops from Thursday, December 27th until Saturday, December 29th. This community event offers free art activities for adults and children of all ages from 10am until 2pm and Homer’s Café will be open for lunch. The youth and adult sessions will be taught by local artists Donna Smith, Steven McPhee, Peggy Couper and Brie Lam, and will include mosaic coasters and rugs, sea glass jewellery, Under the Sea mixed media collages and Eric Carle-inspired art activities. Artist Sue Couper will present a lecture from 11am until noon each day, entitled Tapping into your Creativity and Why it’s Vital. For more information, or to reserve your space, call 299-4000.
Will Black and The Crazy Wednesdays are welcoming 2013 in carnival style at their Rockin’ Mardi Gras New Year’s Eve Party at Hog Penny on Monday, December 31st. As you can probably tell by the title, this is a Mardi Gras theme night with complete with authentic decorations, complimentary beads and French Quarter masks for all late seating dinner patrons. This will be from 10.30pm until 1.30am, dress code is smart casual and it is open to the public with no cover charge. The MEF Group also present a couple of New Year’s Eve options for Monday, December 31st as L’Oriental are offering a special $69.75 menu and Blu are offering a special $79.75 menu. Both dinners include a glass of prosecco, party favours and a specially priced $40 ticket to Margarita’s Grill Red Carpet Experience Party. There is also the option to order from the a la carte menu. After all the self-indulgence of the festive season, you’ll probably be looking for some options to get back into shape for 2013, right? Balance Fitness Boot Camp is a high energy, calorie torching, cardio and resistance interval workout on Sundays 9am in the Botanical Gardens and on Wednesdays at 6am at Lindo’s Devonshire. The Sunday Bootcamp is $90 per term, and Wednesday Bootcamp is $90 per term (6 weeks) and all drop-ins are $20.
